Surface Flow Wetland

Surface flow wetlands are shallow, vegetated systems in which water moves across the soil surface, providing ecological functions and treatment of contaminated water. As water passes slowly through basins containing emergent plants, suspended particles settle, microbial communities transform pollutants, and vegetation and soils retain nutrients and other contaminants. Natural and constructed surface flow wetlands are used to polish municipal wastewater, manage stormwater, reduce nutrient and sediment loads, and create habitat for wildlife. Their low-energy operation and integration with natural processes make them valuable tools for sustainable environmental management, although performance depends on hydraulic conditions, vegetation, climate, and pollutant characteristics.

Surface Dye Flow Visualization: A Qualitative Method to Observe Streakline Patterns in Supersonic Flow

2023

Flow visualization around or on a body is an important tool in aerodynamics research. It provides a method to qualitatively and quantitatively study flow structure, and it also helps researchers theorize and verify fluid flow behavior. Flow visualization can be divided into two categories: off-the-surface visualization and surface flow visualization. Off-the-surface flow visualization techniques involve determining the flow characteristics around the body of interest. They include but are not...

Detection of Vitronectin Binding to Bacterial Surfaces using Flow Cytometry

2025

This video demonstrates the detection of vitronectin's interaction with bacterial surface proteins. The flow-cytometry analysis measures the fluorescence signal of fluorescently labeled antibodies bound to vitronectin, confirming its presence at the bacterial surface. This technique provides insights into host-pathogen interactions and potential bacterial infection therapies.

Isolation of Ammonium-Oxidizing Iron Reducers from a Wetland Soil–Derived Enrichment Culture

Begin with a wetland soil-derived enrichment culture containing bacterial communities. The culture exhibits Feammox activity, ammonium oxidation coupled to ferric iron reduction, indicating the enrichment of a bacterium capable of this metabolic process.Serially dilute the culture using media.Streak the diluted samples onto test agar plates supplemented with ferric iron and ammonium.Use control plates that lack either ferric iron or ammonium, or contain ferric iron with organic carbon instead of...

The Submerged Printing of Cells onto a Modified Surface Using a Continuous Flow Microspotter

This 3D microfluidic printing technology prints arrays of cells onto submerged surfaces. We describe how arrays of cells are delivered microfluidically in 3D flow cells onto submerged surfaces. By printing onto submerged surfaces, cell microarrays were produced that allow for drug screening and cytotoxicity assessment in a multitude of areas.
