Investment Valuation

Investment valuation is the process of estimating what an asset, company, or security is worth based on its expected financial benefits, risk, and market conditions. Analysts commonly use discounted cash flow models, which convert projected future cash flows into present value by applying a discount rate, and relative valuation, which compares measures such as price-to-earnings or enterprise-value-to-revenue ratios with those of similar investments. These methods support decisions about buying, selling, financing, and allocating capital. In finance, valuation also helps assess market mispricing, test assumptions about growth and risk, and communicate the economic rationale behind investment recommendations.
