On-farm Materials

On-farm materials are biological, environmental, and production-related samples collected directly from agricultural settings for analysis, making them important for studying infection and immune responses under real-world conditions. These materials may include animal specimens, feed, water, bedding, manure, or other farm-associated samples that can contain pathogens, antigens, antibodies, or microbial genetic material. Proper collection, labeling, storage, and transport help preserve target components and reduce contamination before laboratory testing. In immunology and infection research, on-farm materials support pathogen surveillance, exposure assessment, outbreak investigation, vaccine evaluation, and evaluation of how management practices influence disease transmission and host health.

2016

The integration of conductive nanoparticles, such as graphene nanoplatelets, into glass fiber composite materials creates an intrinsic electrical network susceptible to strain. Here, different methods to obtain strain sensors based on the addition of graphene nanoplatelets into the epoxy matrix or as a coating on glass fabrics are proposed.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In contrast to the production of cars or toasters, where millions of identical copies are made and extensive prototype testing is possible, each civil engineering structure is unique and very expensive to reproduce (Fig.1). Therefore, civil engineers must extensively rely on analytical modeling to design their structures. These models are simplified abstractions of reality and are used to...

Supercritical Nitrogen Processing for the Purification of Reactive Porous Materials

2015

Nitrogen is an effective supercritical fluid for extraction or drying processes due to its small molecular size, high density in the near-liquid supercritical regime, and chemical inertness. We present a supercritical nitrogen drying protocol for the purification treatment of reactive, porous materials.
