Prochlorococcus Med4

Prochlorococcus MED4 is a high-light-adapted marine cyanobacterium and a model for studying how streamlined microbes thrive in nutrient-poor oceans. Its compact genome encodes efficient photosynthetic machinery containing divinyl chlorophyll a and b, allowing cells to convert light into energy under intense illumination while minimizing cellular demands. During cyanophage infection, viruses attach to the cell, deliver their genetic material, and redirect host resources toward viral replication, revealing how microbial interactions influence survival and evolution. Research on MED4 supports studies of host-phage dynamics, genome reduction, environmental adaptation, and infection mechanisms relevant to microbial ecology and immunology.

Photobleaching Enables Super-resolution Imaging of the FtsZ Ring in the Cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus

Here we describe a photobleaching method to reduce the autofluorescence of cyanobacteria. After photobleaching, stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy is used to obtain three-dimensional super-resolution images of the cyanobacterial FtsZ ring.
