Reserve Accounts

Reserve accounts are balances that commercial banks hold at a central bank, serving as a foundation for payment settlement, liquidity management, and monetary policy. Banks use these accounts to transfer funds between one another, meet reserve requirements where applicable, and manage short-term obligations; central banks can change reserve levels through open market operations, lending facilities, or asset purchases and may pay interest on reserves. In macroeconomics, reserve accounts help explain how central-bank actions influence interbank interest rates, credit conditions, and the broader money supply. Their role is especially important for assessing financial stability and the transmission of monetary policy.
