Biliary-enteric Anastomosis

Biliary-enteric anastomosis is a surgical connection between the biliary tree and the intestine that restores the passage of bile when normal drainage is obstructed, damaged, or surgically removed. The procedure typically joins the common bile duct or hepatic ducts to a segment of jejunum, allowing bile to bypass the ampulla and flow directly into the gastrointestinal tract for digestion. Surgeons use techniques such as hepaticojejunostomy or choledochojejunostomy during reconstruction after bile duct injury, tumor resection, transplantation, or complex hepatobiliary surgery. Successful anastomosis relieves obstruction and supports bile flow, while careful technique helps reduce complications such as leakage, stricture, and recurrent cholangitis.

To help assess the molecular mechanisms underlying zebrafish biliary-driven liver regeneration, we established a liver injury model in which the nitroreductase-expressing hepatocytes are genetically ablated upon metronidazole treatment. In this protocol, we describe how to adeptly manipulate, monitor and analyze hepatocyte ablation and biliary-driven liver regeneration.
