Brief Illness Perception

Brief illness perception is a concise approach to assessing how people understand, interpret, and emotionally respond to a health condition, making patients’ beliefs visible alongside clinical findings. Typically implemented through a short self-report questionnaire, it asks patients to rate core dimensions such as perceived consequences, duration, personal and treatment control, symptom identity, concern, understanding, and emotional impact, with an open item often addressing perceived causes. In medicine, these responses can clarify barriers to treatment adherence, support patient-centered communication, guide education and behavior-change interventions, and help researchers examine how illness beliefs relate to coping, outcomes, and quality of life.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University The study of sensation—how signals are transduced from sensory organs, like the eyes—and perception—how the brain interprets these messages—has a rich history dating back to the 19th century, when great strides were made in understanding the properties of light and how they relate to the visual system. Importantly, such sensory and perceptual processes determine what we see, feel, taste, and hear in our surroundings. However, many...

Subliminal perception refers to the processing of sensory information that occurs below the level of conscious awareness. Researchers study subliminal perception by presenting a stimulus, such as a word or image, very quickly, typically around 50 milliseconds. This rapid presentation is often followed by another stimulus, such as a pattern of dots or lines, which blocks further mental processing of the initial stimulus. As a result, if participants cannot identify the initial stimulus better...

Perception is influenced by perceptual set, context, motivation, and emotion. Perceptual set, or perceptual expectancy, refers to the tendency to perceive things in a particular way, influenced by previous experiences and expectations. This phenomenon affects the interpretation of stimuli, creating a set of mental tendencies and assumptions that impact sensory perceptions of sound, taste, touch, and sight. An illustrative example of a perceptual set is the scenario where an airline pilot told...
