Cannabis Vapor Exposure

Cannabis vapor exposure is the inhalation of an aerosol produced by heating cannabis plant material, extracts, or concentrates, an important topic in medicine because it affects both users and people nearby. Heating releases cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol, along with other volatile compounds and particles; inhaled material deposits in the respiratory tract and can enter the bloodstream through the lungs. Studying this exposure helps researchers distinguish vaporization from combustion, evaluate respiratory and cardiovascular responses, assess secondhand exposure, and understand how device design, temperature, and product composition influence dose and potential health effects.

This protocol describes a method for exposing rodents to electronic cigarette vapor (E-vapor) and cigarette smoke. Exposure chambers are constructed by modifying anesthesia chambers with an automated pumping system that delivers E-vapor or cigarette smoke to rodents. This system can easily be modified to accommodate many experimental endpoints.

Development of a Preclinical Inhalation Model to Test Vaporized Cannabis Distillates

Cannabis distillate vape cartridges are battery-powered devices that aerosolize extracts containing high concentrations of cannabinoids. The absence of established preclinical models for these products creates challenges in studying their physiological effects. To address this gap, a standardized preclinical inhalation murine model for vaporized cannabis distillates has been developed.

Vaporization

2019

The physical form of a substance changes by changing its temperature. For example, raising the temperature of a liquid causes the liquid to vaporize (convert into vapor). The process is called vaporization—a surface phenomenon. For vaporization to occur, kinetic energy must be greater than the intermolecular forces that keep molecules bonded. The amount of energy needed to vaporize a quantity of liquid at a given pressure and a constant temperature is called the heat of vaporization. When...

When a liquid vaporizes in a closed container, gas molecules cannot escape. As these gas phase molecules move randomly about, they will occasionally collide with the surface of the condensed phase, and in some cases, these collisions will result in the molecules re-entering the condensed phase. The change from the gas phase to the liquid is called condensation. When the rate of condensation becomes equal to the rate of vaporization, neither the amount of the liquid nor the amount of the vapor...
