In-hospital Mortality

In-hospital mortality is the proportion of hospitalized patients who die before discharge, serving as a key measure of clinical outcomes and healthcare performance. It reflects the combined effects of disease severity, patient comorbidities, complications, treatment effectiveness, and the timeliness and quality of care during admission. Clinicians and researchers use in-hospital mortality rates to evaluate interventions, compare outcomes across hospitals or patient populations, identify disparities, and support quality-improvement efforts. Because results depend on case mix and methods of measurement, mortality analyses often require risk adjustment to distinguish differences in patient risk from differences in care.

Hospitals provide inpatient and outpatient services. Inpatient services provide care to patients that stay in the hospital for an extended period, ranging from days to months. Examples of inpatient services include intensive care units, hospital wards, or surgeries. Outpatient services provide care to patients who come to a hospital for a diagnostic or treatment but do not stay overnight —for example, diagnostic tests, surgical procedures, or health education. Nurses that work in hospitals have...

Hospitals offer medical and surgical care to the sick and injured, along with accommodation while they recover. At the same time, they also provide outpatient, emergency, psychiatric, and rehabilitation services to meet various community needs. In addition to providing medical care, hospitals also act as hubs for medical research and training. Hospitals use clinical procedures and evidence-based practice standards to deliver patient care. To deliver safe and efficient care, a nurse must stay up...

Source: Anderson, Q. L., et al. A High-throughput, High-content, Liquid-based C. elegans Pathosystem. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)The video demonstrates a liquid-based assay where genetically modified C. elegans larvae are exposed to pathogenic bacteria in a microplate. Bacterial toxins secreted into the medium induce host stress and death. A fluorescent dye stains dead worms, allowing imaging-based quantification of mortality to assess genetic susceptibility or resistance.
