Osteoprotegerin Opg

Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a secreted protein that helps regulate bone remodeling by controlling the formation and activity of osteoclasts, the cells that resorb bone. As a decoy receptor, OPG binds receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL), preventing RANKL from activating RANK on osteoclast precursor cells and thereby reducing osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption. This OPG-RANKL-RANK signaling system is central to skeletal homeostasis and is studied in medicine because disrupted signaling can contribute to osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disorders. Measuring or therapeutically targeting this pathway may support research into bone loss, fracture risk, and treatment strategies.
