Percutaneous Biliary Drainage

Percutaneous biliary drainage is a minimally invasive procedure that relieves blockage in the bile ducts by creating access through the skin, helping restore bile flow when endoscopic treatment is not possible or has failed. Using ultrasound and fluoroscopic imaging, a clinician guides a needle through the liver into an obstructed duct, injects contrast to map the biliary system, and places a catheter for external drainage or internal stenting. The procedure can reduce jaundice, infection, and pressure-related complications caused by biliary obstruction from tumors, stones, or postoperative injury. It also provides diagnostic access and may serve as a bridge to surgery or further treatment.

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA A surgical airway procedure is indicated when other forms of endotracheal intubation have failed and ventilation is worsening or not possible. This is the feared "can't intubate, can't ventilate" scenario, and in the emergency setting, cricothyrotomy is the surgical procedure of choice. Cricothyrotomy is preferred over tracheotomy because of the lower risk of complications, the predictable anatomy...

To help assess the molecular mechanisms underlying zebrafish biliary-driven liver regeneration, we established a liver injury model in which the nitroreductase-expressing hepatocytes are genetically ablated upon metronidazole treatment. In this protocol, we describe how to adeptly manipulate, monitor and analyze hepatocyte ablation and biliary-driven liver regeneration.
