Ultrasonography Guided Placement

Ultrasonography-guided placement is a clinical technique that uses ultrasound imaging to direct a needle, catheter, or other device to a target while reducing reliance on surface landmarks. A transducer sends high-frequency sound waves into the body; returning echoes form real-time images that help the operator identify anatomy, choose an insertion path, and monitor instrument advancement. The approach supports procedures such as vascular access, regional anesthesia, fluid drainage, and tissue sampling, where accurate positioning can improve technical success and help avoid nearby structures. By linking imaging with procedural guidance, it strengthens bedside decision-making and supports safer, more efficient minimally invasive care.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Ultrasonography is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the body's internal structures. It is a non-invasive and safe procedure that does not involve the use of ionizing radiation, making it widely used in various medical fields. Ultrasonography is used to study heart function, blood flow in the neck or extremities, certain conditions such as gallbladder disease, and fetal growth and development. During an ultrasonography procedure, a handheld device called a...

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...
