Chemiluminescent Reagent

Chemiluminescent reagents are chemicals that produce light through a reaction, enabling sensitive detection of specific molecules without external illumination. In common assays, an enzyme such as horseradish peroxidase catalyzes the oxidation of luminol in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, generating an excited product that releases photons as it returns to a lower-energy state. In neuroscience, these reagents support immunoblotting, immunoassays, and related analyses of proteins in brain tissue, cultured neurons, and other neural samples. The resulting light signal can be captured to compare protein abundance, track signaling pathways, and investigate molecular changes associated with neural development, injury, or disease.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstrated by: Timothy Beck and Lucas Arney Many reactions in organic chemistry are moisture-sensitive and must be carried out under careful exclusion of water. In these cases the reagents have a high affinity to react with water from the atmosphere and if left exposed the desired reaction will not take place or give poor yields, because the reactants are chemically altered. In order to prevent undesired reactions with H2O...

Endotoxin Activity Assay: A Chemiluminescence-Based Bioassay for Investigating Endotoxin Activity in Blood Sample

This video demonstrates a rapid bioassay for investigating endotoxin activity in a whole blood sample via a chemiluminescence-based method. This assay is a rapid and sensitive biomarker test for early-stage diagnosis of endotoxin-mediated sepsis.

EDTA: Auxiliary Complexing Reagents

EDTA titrations are usually carried out in highly basic conditions, where the fully deprotonated form of EDTA, Y4−, actively complexes with the free metal ions in the solution. Several metal ions precipitate as hydrous oxide (hydroxides, oxides, or oxyhydroxides) under these conditions, lowering the concentration of free metal ions in the solution. For this reason, auxiliary complexing agents or ligands such as ammonia, tartrate, citrate, or triethanolamine are used in EDTA titrations to...

A Novel Technique for Generating and Observing Chemiluminescence in a Biological Setting

2017

This protocol describes a new intraoperative imaging technique that uses a ruthenium complex as a source of chemiluminescent light emission, thereby producing high signal-to-noise ratios during in vivo imaging. Intraoperative imaging is an expanding field that could revolutionize the way that surgical procedures are performed.
