Compensatory Saccades

Compensatory saccades are rapid, corrective eye movements that restore visual fixation when the eyes drift away from a target, helping maintain a stable view during head or body motion. They occur when the vestibulo-ocular reflex does not fully match head movement: the resulting retinal image slip triggers a saccade that redirects the eyes toward the target, either during the motion or after it. In neuroscience, analyzing compensatory saccades provides insight into gaze stabilization, vestibular and cerebellar function, and sensorimotor control. Their timing, direction, and amplitude can also help identify deficits in the vestibular system and assess recovery or adaptation after injury.

The article describes a practical method for recording horizontal eye movements with high accuracy by electro-oculogram in neurological patients, using a cup Ag-AgCl electrode with a wide plastic fringe. Stable measurement requires proper selection and fixation of electrodes, taking sufficient time for light adaptation to occur, and re-calibration as needed.
