Corticostriatal Occlusion

Corticostriatal occlusion is the disruption or blockade of communication between the cerebral cortex and striatum, a pathway central to action selection, movement, learning, and reward. It occurs when cortical inputs to striatal neurons are physically interrupted or functionally silenced, reducing excitatory synaptic transmission and altering downstream basal ganglia activity. In neuroscience research, this concept helps clarify how cortical signals influence striatal circuits and how impaired connectivity affects behavior. Experimental models of corticostriatal occlusion can therefore support investigations of motor control, habit formation, decision-making, and circuit dysfunction associated with neurological disease.
