Glomerular Activity

Glomerular activity refers to neural signaling within glomeruli, specialized anatomical units that organize sensory input in the olfactory bulb. Odorant receptors on olfactory sensory neurons detect chemical molecules, and the neurons’ axons converge onto shared glomeruli, where neurotransmitter release activates mitral and tufted cells as well as local interneurons. Patterns of glomerular activity therefore create an early spatial and temporal representation of odor identity and intensity. Measuring these responses with electrophysiology, calcium imaging, or other neural recording methods helps researchers study sensory coding, circuit connectivity, behavioral perception, and changes associated with neurological disease.

Glomerular Filtration

The filtration membrane in the renal system is a highly specialized structure essential for filtering blood. It consists of glomerular capillaries and podocytes, forming a selective barrier that permits the passage of water and small solutes while restricting most plasma proteins and blood cells. Components of the Filtration Membrane The filtration process involves three key layers: the glomerular endothelial cells, the basement membrane, and the podocyte-formed filtration slits. Measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the gold standard for kidney function assessment. Here we describe a high-throughput method which allows the determination of GFR in conscious mice by using a single bolus injection, determination of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-inulin in plasma and calculation of GFR by a two-phase exponential decay model.
