Morphological Parameters

Morphological parameters are measurable features that describe the size, shape, organization, and structural complexity of biological cells or tissues; in neuroscience, they provide a quantitative way to characterize neurons and neural circuits. Researchers derive these parameters from microscopy or imaging by tracing cellular boundaries and processes, then measuring features such as soma area, neurite length, branching pattern, spine density, and spatial distribution. Comparing these measurements across brain regions, developmental stages, experimental conditions, or disease models can reveal changes in connectivity and cellular organization, support classification of neuronal types, and link structural remodeling to function, behavior, or pathology.

2026

Mapping Microglial Parameters Software (MMPS) is a user-friendly analysis pipeline that requires no coding expertise and semi-automates single-cell microglial morphology analysis from immunofluorescence images. Validated in a rodent lipopolysaccharide-induced neuroinflammation model, MMPS reproducibly detects activation-associated morphological changes and enables standardized, scalable microglial phenotyping.

The simplest mechanical waves are associated with simple harmonic motion and repeat themselves for several cycles. These simple harmonic waves can be modeled using a combination of sine and cosine functions. Consider a simplified surface water wave that moves across the water's surface. Unlike complex ocean waves, in surface water waves, water moves vertically, oscillating up and down, whereas the disturbance of the wave moves horizontally through the medium. If a seagull is floating on the...

Bacterial and archaeal cells exhibit remarkable diversity in shape and structure, critical in their adaptability and functionality. Among bacteria, the most commonly observed shapes include cocci and bacilli. Cocci are spherical and may exist singly or in groupings such as pairs (diplococci), chains (streptococci), clusters (staphylococci), or tetrads. Bacilli, in contrast, are rod-shaped and can also occur as single cells, in pairs, or chains, depending on their environmental and genetic...
