Pretreatment Reagents

Pretreatment reagents are chemical solutions used to prepare biological samples before staining, labeling, imaging, or analysis, helping make target structures accessible and results more consistent. In neuroscience, these reagents may fix tissue, permeabilize cell membranes, block nonspecific binding, or retrieve masked antigens so antibodies and probes can interact with neuronal proteins and cellular components. Their selection and sequence influence signal intensity, background, tissue morphology, and preservation of delicate neural structures. Proper pretreatment supports immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and related assays used to study neuronal organization, disease-associated changes, and molecular processes in the nervous system.

2016

The pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass with protic low-cost ionic liquids is shown, resulting in a delignified cellulose-rich pulp and a purified lignin. The pulp gives rise to high glucose yields after enzymatic saccharification.

Handheld Device for Saliva Pretreatment to Improve Cortisol Detection

2026

This protocol describes a rapid saliva pretreatment method for improving cortisol detection. A handheld filtration device is used to remove mucins and other interfering substances while preserving the target analyte. The pretreated saliva exhibits improved capillary flow, thereby enabling more consistent and reproducible assay performance.

Preparing Anhydrous Reagents and Equipment

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstrated by: Timothy Beck and Lucas Arney Many reactions in organic chemistry are moisture-sensitive and must be carried out under careful exclusion of water. In these cases the reagents have a high affinity to react with water from the atmosphere and if left exposed the desired reaction will not take place or give poor yields, because the reactants are chemically altered. In order to prevent undesired reactions with H2O...

EDTA: Auxiliary Complexing Reagents

2024

EDTA titrations are usually carried out in highly basic conditions, where the fully deprotonated form of EDTA, Y4−, actively complexes with the free metal ions in the solution. Several metal ions precipitate as hydrous oxide (hydroxides, oxides, or oxyhydroxides) under these conditions, lowering the concentration of free metal ions in the solution. For this reason, auxiliary complexing agents or ligands such as ammonia, tartrate, citrate, or triethanolamine are used in EDTA titrations to...
