5-lipoxygenase Inhibitors

5-lipoxygenase inhibitors are pharmacological agents that reduce the production of leukotrienes, lipid mediators involved in inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and immune-cell recruitment. They act by blocking 5-lipoxygenase, the enzyme that converts arachidonic acid into 5-hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoic acid and then leukotriene A4, the precursor of several biologically active leukotrienes. In pharmacology, these compounds help clarify how leukotriene signaling contributes to airway hyperresponsiveness and other inflammatory responses. The approved inhibitor zileuton is used in asthma management, while related agents support research into anti-inflammatory therapies and treatments for diseases driven by excessive leukotriene synthesis.

Eukaryotic Transcription Inhibitors

2020

Certain biochemical processes, such as embryonic development and cell growth regulation, depend on the repression of specific genes. DNA binding proteins known as eukaryotic transcription inhibitors regulate the repression of gene expression in eukaryotes. The presence of these inhibitors at the required location and time in the cell is triggered by the presence of hormones and additional signals from other cells. Eukaryotic transcription inhibitors usually contain two distinct domains, a DNA...

The 5 c's of Pricing

2024

The 5 Cs of pricing provide a comprehensive framework for strategic pricing decisions. They include: Company Objectives: The company's goals are pivotal in determining pricing. Whether the aim is to maximize profit, increase market share, or survive in a competitive market, it will directly influence the pricing strategy. Cost: It involves calculating the total cost of producing a product or service, including fixed and variable costs. Pricing must cover these costs and provide a reasonable...

5-Number Summary

2023

In a dataset, the 5-number summary includes the minimum data value, the data value of the first quartile, the median data value or data value of the second quartile, the data value of the third quartile, and the maximum data value. These 5 data values can be visualized as a box and whisker plot. In a box plot, the minimum and maximum data values represent the lower and upper whiskers in the graph, and the median is designated as the center of the box in the chart. The first quartile and third...

Modelling Intratumoral Treatment with miRNA Inhibitors: A Method to Analyze the Effect of miRNA Inhibitors on Tumor Growth in Murine Model

2023

This video demonstrates the in vivo delivery of miRNA inhibitors as therapeutic agents against tumor growth in orthotopic mouse models. The intratumoral administration of synthetic miRNA inhibitors or antagomiRs allows them to bind and inhibit endogenous miRNAs, thereby causing mRNA upregulation and suppression of tumor growth.

Assessing Bacterial Swarming Using a Gradient Inhibitor Plate

Source: Guo, S., et al. Quantifying Bacterial Surface Swarming Motility on Inducer Gradient Plates. J. Vis. Exp. (2022).This video demonstrates the use of a double-layer gradient swarm plate to study bacterial swarming behavior under varying inhibitor concentrations. A plate with a gradient-forming inhibitor in the bottom layer is inoculated with bacteria and incubated. Images are captured at regular intervals to analyze the effect of inhibitor concentration on bacterial swarming.
