Aminosalicylates

Aminosalicylates are anti-inflammatory drugs that contain 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and are used primarily to treat inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. They act mainly at the intestinal mucosa, where 5-ASA reduces inflammatory signaling and mediators, including prostaglandins and leukotrienes; drug formulations control its release in the colon or other sections of the gastrointestinal tract. Oral and rectal preparations can induce and maintain remission, with treatment selection guided by disease location and severity. Studying aminosalicylates illustrates how drug delivery, local pharmacologic action, and formulation design influence therapeutic outcomes in gastrointestinal pharmacology.
