Regulatory Surveillance

Regulatory surveillance is the systematic oversight of medicines and other health products to assess their safety, quality, and effectiveness throughout the product life cycle. In pharmacology, it combines adverse event reporting, safety databases, inspections, and epidemiological studies to detect signals, evaluate whether observed events may be drug related, and compare benefits with risks in real-world use. Regulators and manufacturers use these findings to update product information, introduce risk-management measures, restrict use, or remove a product from the market when necessary. This continuing process supports pharmacovigilance, protects patients, and helps ensure that therapeutic decisions reflect current evidence.

Cis-regulatory Sequences

2020

Cis-regulatory sequences are short fragments of non-coding DNA that are present on the same chromosomes as the genes that they regulate. These fragments serve as binding sites for transcriptional regulators, proteins that are responsible for controlling gene transcription and differential gene expression across cell types in eukaryotes. Cis-regulatory sequences can be close to the gene of interest or thousands of bases away in the DNA sequence; however, those sequences that are further away are...

Overtreatment is often administered to patients with low-risk prostate cancer; super-active surveillance can help avoid such overtreatment.

Principles of Disease Surveillance

2025

Disease surveillance is the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice. This process integrates data dissemination to entities responsible for preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Surveillance systems provide crucial information for action, helping public health authorities make informed decisions to manage and prevent outbreaks, ensure public safety, optimize...

Immune Surveillance by NK Cells and Phagocytes

2026

Immune surveillance is an integral part of the innate immune system, involving the continuous monitoring of peripheral tissues to detect and respond to pathogens, infected cells, or cancerous cells. This surveillance is conducted primarily by natural killer (NK) cells and phagocytes, which employ distinct but complementary mechanisms to identify and eliminate threats. Natural Killer Cells: The Fast Responders NK cells are large granular lymphocytes found in the blood and lymphatic system. These...
