Laser Micro Machining

Laser micromachining is a precision manufacturing process that uses focused laser energy to cut, drill, pattern, or modify materials at micrometer-scale dimensions. The laser concentrates light into a small region, where controlled energy deposition causes localized melting, vaporization, ablation, or other material changes; beam position, intensity, wavelength, and pulse duration determine the result. In physics and engineering, the technique supports fabrication of microchannels, apertures, sensors, electronic components, and intricate surface structures across metals, polymers, ceramics, and other materials. Its noncontact operation and fine spatial control enable complex geometries, reduced mechanical stress, and rapid prototyping for research and advanced manufacturing.

We used synchrotron X-ray tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) to non-invasively produce 3D tomographic datasets with a pixel-resolution of 0.7µm. Using volume rendering software, this allows the reconstruction of internal structures in their natural state without the artefacts produced by histological sectioning.

2012

An experimental method to examine the early plasma evolution induced by ultrashort laser pulses is described. Using this method, high quality images of early plasma are obtained with high temporal and spatial resolutions. A novel integrated atomistic model is used to simulate and explain the mechanisms of early plasma.
