Animal Learning

Animal learning is the process by which nonhuman animals acquire or modify behavior through experience, making it a central topic in comparative and psychological research. Learning occurs when environmental events alter the likelihood of future responses, including through habituation, classical conditioning, operant conditioning, observational learning, and associations between cues and outcomes. Researchers study these changes using controlled tasks that measure behavior across repeated trials, reinforcement schedules, and changing conditions. Findings clarify how memory, motivation, adaptation, and decision-making operate across species, while informing theories of cognition, animal welfare, behavioral ecology, and the development of evidence-based training practices.

An Introduction to Learning and Memory

Learning is the process of acquiring new information and memory is the retention or storage of that information. Different types of learning, such as non-associative and associative learning, and different types of memory, such as long-term and short-term memory, have been associated with human behaviors. Studying these components in detail helps behavioral scientists understand the neural mechanisms behind these two complex phenomena. JoVE's overview on learning and memory introduces common...

Form and Function of Crickets and Crayfish ExpandNOTE: To observe the relationship between form and function in animals, you will be examining and dissecting a cricket and a crayfish. Each pair of students will receive one of each of these organisms. When dissecting, be sure to wear gloves, closed-toed shoes, and safety goggles. Take care when handling dissecting tools, as they may be sharp. HYPOTHESES: In this experiment, the experimental hypothesis could be that the cricket and crayfish have...

Kingdom Animalia is composed of a range of organisms united by a set of common characteristics. Barring a few exceptions, animals are multicellular eukaryotes that move, consume organic matter, and reproduce sexually. Although these attributes are shared, species within this kingdom are also extremely diverse. This diversity is due to adaptation of each species to a different niche. The niche of a species includes the area, function, and interrelationship of that species with other biotic and...
