Chronic Insomnia

Chronic insomnia is a persistent sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or obtaining restorative sleep despite adequate opportunity, with effects that extend into daytime functioning. In psychology, it is commonly understood through a combination of conditioned arousal, unhelpful sleep-related beliefs and behaviors, and disruptions in sleep-wake regulation that can maintain nighttime wakefulness. Assessment typically examines sleep patterns, daytime impairment, medical or psychiatric contributors, and environmental factors, often using sleep diaries and structured interviews. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) applies stimulus control, sleep restriction, cognitive restructuring, and relaxation techniques to improve sleep and reduce long-term impairment.
