Effort Praise

Effort praise is positive feedback that recognizes a person’s persistence, strategy, practice, or improvement rather than labeling them as naturally talented. In psychology, it can shift attention toward controllable behaviors and learning processes, supporting a mastery orientation in which challenges and mistakes provide information for improvement. Used in classrooms, parenting, coaching, and workplace development, effort praise may encourage persistence, adaptive strategy use, and willingness to attempt difficult tasks. Its effectiveness depends on being specific and sincere, linking the feedback to observable actions instead of offering vague approval or praise that feels disconnected from the person’s actual performance.
