Experimental Techniques

Experimental techniques are systematic methods for testing cause-and-effect relationships by manipulating conditions, measuring responses, and controlling alternative explanations. In psychology, researchers typically assign participants to experimental or control conditions, vary an independent variable, and assess changes in a behavioral, cognitive, or physiological dependent measure, often using randomization and standardized procedures. These methods support laboratory experiments, field studies, reaction-time tasks, psychophysiological recording, and other designs that make observations more reliable and interpretable. By linking controlled evidence to theories of learning, perception, memory, and social behavior, experimental techniques help evaluate hypotheses, improve research methods, and inform clinical, educational, and organizational practice.

Intrabronchial Delivery: A Technique to Administer an Experimental Agent Selectively Into a Mouse Lung

2023

This video describes an intrabronchial approach to administer an experimental agent selectively into distal right and left lung. In the featured protocol, we will administer bleomycin intrabronchially into a mouse to obtain a better model for pulmonary fibrosis.

Catheter Based Intravenous Injection of Experimental Agents: A Technique for Delivering Experimental Agents Intravenously Through Jugular Vein in Mouse Model

2025

In this video, we describe a method for implanting a catheter into the jugular vein of a mouse model through which experimental agents such as drugs and tracer dyes can be delivered intravenously in vivo. Such an arrangement when connected to other systems can also be used for monitoring hemodynamics and blood sampling.

A Technique to Induce Chronic Experimental Autoimmune Dry Eye in Rats

2023

Without using anesthesia, subcutaneously inject the emulsion at the base of the rat tails. Then, on day 14 in a similar manner, inject 200 microliters of the same antigen and incomplete Freund's Adjuvant. On the same day, intraperitoneally inject 300 nanograms of pertussis toxin in 100 microliters of PBS.

A Technique to Induce Chronic Experimental Autoimmune Dry Eye in Rats

2025

This video demonstrates a technique to induce chronic experimental autoimmune dry eye disease in rats. Upon injecting an antigen-adjuvant emulsion containing autoantigens and foreign antigens into a rat at predefined intervals, chronic eye inflammation is induced in the immunized rat by injecting the same antigens into the ocular surface tissues.
