Q1: What is the difference between paramagnetic and diamagnetic complexes?
Paramagnetic complexes contain unpaired electrons and are attracted to magnetic fields, while diamagnetic complexes have all electrons paired and are slightly repelled by magnetic fields. Transition metal complexes are often paramagnetic due to partially populated d-orbitals, whereas most organic molecules are diamagnetic. The presence of unpaired electrons significantly affects a complex's reactivity and magnetic properties.
Q2: How does the Evans method measure unpaired electrons in metal complexes?
The Evans method uses NMR spectroscopy to measure the magnetic susceptibility of a paramagnetic compound by comparing solvent peak chemical shifts. The magnetic susceptibility relates to the magnetic moment, which is calculated in units called Bohr magnetons.
