Procyclical, countercyclical, and acyclical are terms used to describe the direction in which economic variables move in relation to the business cycle.
A procyclical variable moves in the same direction as the business cycle. This means that during an expansion, the variable rises, and during a contraction, it falls.
Consumption is an example of a procyclical variable.
A countercyclical variable moves in the opposite direction to the business cycle.
This means that during an expansion, it declines, and during a contraction, it rises. Unemployment is an example of a countercyclical variable.
An acyclical variable shows no clear pattern with the business cycle.

Real interest rate is an example of an acyclical variable.
