Pode ser demonstrada em uma cadeia alimentar clássica. 
Aqui, a energia da luz solar é a primeira energia de raios absorvida pelas plantas e em seguida convertida em energia química armazenada como carboidrato complexo. 
A vegetação será um dia consumida pelos animais. 
Em seu processo de quebra de açúcares, a energia também libera calor e armazena macromoléculas como reserva de energia química para ser usada posteriormente, ou passada para o predador.

A Primeira Lei da Termodinâmica afirma que a energia não pode ser criada ou destruída, apenas transformada. Isso pode ser demonstrado dentro de uma cadeia alimentar clássica onde a energia da luz do sol é aproveitada como energia radiante pelas plantas, convertida em energia química, e armazenada como carboidratos complexos. A vegetação é então consumida por animais e durante o processo de digestão, os açúcares libertam energia como calor. Os açúcares também produzem energia química que ou é usada em trabalhos, ou armazenada em macromoléculas como glicogénio e ácidos gordos ou consumida por um predador. Os resíduos e a matéria orgânica morta dos animais são então decompostos por bactérias e fungos e devolvidos ao solo para fornecer alimento para as plantas crescerem e o ciclo continua.
 
 <h4>A Primeira Lei da Termodinâmica</h4>
 
 Durante o processo de fotossíntese, os fotões são usados para fazer carboidratos complexos que as plantas usam para viver e crescer, e o oxigénio é libertado na atmosfera.
 
 As plantas eventualmente tornam-se em alimento para animais—herbívoros—e durante o processo de digestão, os açúcares são quebrados e a energia é libertada—seja como calor ou para fornecer energia química a partir da glicose, para guiar processos celulares que permitem que o animal sobreviva e se reproduza. Também pode ser armazenada em macromoléculas como energia química. Por exemplo, o glicogénio pode ser armazenado no fígado ou músculos e pode ser rapidamente acedido em alturas de alta necessidade energética. Também pode ser armazenada como uma reserva de energia na forma de ácidos gordos. Por fim, o animal pode passar a energia para um predador—um carnívoro, que a usará de forma semelhante.
 
 Os resíduos de cada etapa também são devolvidos ao ar, água ou solo e usados para manter a cadeia alimentar. Decompositores como bactérias e fungos comem matéria orgânica morta e devolvem-na ao solo para que possa ser usada novamente pelas plantas para crescerem.

Energy flow in a food web shows the First Law of Thermodynamics in action. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change form as it moves through living things and the environment.

Sunlight is the starting point. Plants capture radiant energy from the sun during photosynthesis and turn it into chemical energy stored in complex carbohydrates. At the same time, oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

Herbivores eat the plants and use those sugars during digestion. The energy is released as heat or used as chemical energy from glucose to power cellular processes that help the animal survive and reproduce. Some of that energy is also stored in macromolecules. Glycogen can be kept in the liver or muscles and used quickly when energy demand is high. Energy can also be stored as fatty acids.

That stored energy can then move to a predator, such as a carnivore, which uses it in a similar way. Waste products and dead organic matter from animals are broken down by decomposers like bacteria and fungi. The materials return to the soil, air, or water, and plants can use them again as the food web continues.
