The Carbon Cycle

- No ciclo do carbono, átomos de carbono viajam por todo o ecossistema. 
Começando com a fotossíntese, os autotróficos, como plantas, transformam o carbono da atmosfera na forma de dióxido de carbono em energia consumível que é ingerida pelos heterotróficos. 
Então estes organismos podem retornar o carbono para a atmosfera através da respiração ou para o solo durante a decomposição. 
O dióxido de carbono na atmosfera também é altamente solúvel em água, então os oceanos possuem um grande reservatório de carbono. 
O dióxido de carbono reage com a água para formar ácido carbônico e depois íons carbonato. 
O carbonato de cálcio da água do mar é usado para construir esqueletos de corais e conchas de moluscos. 
O carbono também pode ser armazenado por pouco tempo nos corpos de árvores longevas e no solo, ou por muito mais tempo no caso dos combustíveis fósseis, os restos orgânicos de organismos vivos.

O carbono é a base de toda a matéria orgânica da Terra, e é reciclado através do ecossistema por dois processos primários: um em que o carbono é trocado entre organismos vivos, e um em que o carbono entram em ciclo por longos períodos de tempo através de restos orgânicos fossilizados, intemperismo de rochas e atividade vulcânica. As atividades humanas, incluindo o aumento das práticas agrícolas e a queima de combustíveis fósseis, afetaram muito o equilíbrio do ciclo natural do carbono.
 
 <h4>Ciclo Biológico do Carbono</h4>
 
 Todos os seres vivos são compostos por moléculas orgânicas que contêm átomos do elemento carbono. O carbono existe na atmosfera como gás dióxido de carbono, que reage com água para formar bicarbonato. Durante a fotossíntese, os produtores primários (ou autotrofos) convertem dióxido de carbono e bicarbonato em compostos orgânicos contendo carbono, como glicose, para fornecer energia para o crescimento, manutenção e outros processos.
 
 Os seres heterotróficos recebem carbono orgânico para crescimento e manutenção, consumindo autotrofos. Através do processo de respiração celular, essas moléculas orgânicas são quebradas para libertar a energia armazenada dentro delas. Os subprodutos desse processo são a água e o dióxido de carbono, que é libertado na atmosfera através da respiração, dando continuidade ao ciclo.
 
 O carbono também pode retornar ao meio ambiente como detritos de animais ou como material em decomposição de organismos mortos. Decompositores, como bactérias e fungos, dividem esses materiais em dióxido de carbono e compostos orgânicos.
 
 <h4>Ciclo Geológico de Longo Prazo</h4>
 
 O carbono é armazenado por longos períodos de tempo na atmosfera, grandes corpos de água, sedimentos oceânicos, solo, restos de animais fossilizados e no interior da Terra. O dióxido de carbono da atmosfera dissolve-se na água do oceano, reage com moléculas de água e é convertido em carbonatos. Combinados com iões de cálcio, esses carbonatos compõem as conchas de carbonato de cálcio de muitos organismos marinhos, como corais e ostras. Quando esses organismos morrem, os seus restos mortais são quebrados e podem depositar-se no fundo do oceano e gradualmente tornarem-se parte do sedimento. Este sedimento eventualmente forma calcário, que constitui o maior reservatório de carbono da Terra.
 
 Árvores grandes e de longa vida também podem armazenar carbono nos seus corpos por séculos. Como um sequestro de muito maior prazo (reservatório de carbono), restos de organismos armazenam carbono na forma de combustíveis fósseis—como carvão, petróleo e gás natural—nas profundezas da Terra ao longo de milhões de anos. O carbono armazenado nas profundezas da superfície da Terra pode retornar à superfície e à atmosfera durante erupções vulcânicas.
 
 <h4>Impactos Humanos no Ciclo do Carbono</h4>
 
 A queima de combustíveis fósseis e madeira tem libertado quantidades substanciais de dióxido de carbono na atmosfera, alterando o clima global. Carbon moves through living systems and Earth over short and long time scales. It is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and it cycles through ecosystems by passing between organisms and by moving through rocks, oceans, and the atmosphere. Human activities, including farming and burning fossil fuels, have changed this balance.

In the biological carbon cycle, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reacts with water to form bicarbonate. Primary producers, or autotrophs, use carbon dioxide and bicarbonate during photosynthesis to make organic compounds such as glucose. These carbon-containing molecules support growth, maintenance, and other life processes.

Heterotrophs get organic carbon by eating autotrophs. They break down these molecules during cellular respiration to release stored energy. Water and carbon dioxide are the main byproducts, and the carbon returns to the atmosphere through respiration. Carbon can also leave organisms as waste or as dead matter. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break this material down and release carbon dioxide and organic compounds back into the environment.

Carbon also moves through long-term geological storage. It can remain in the atmosphere, large water bodies, ocean sediment, soil, fossilized animal remains, and deep inside the Earth for long periods. In the ocean, dissolved carbon dioxide reacts with water and becomes carbonates. These carbonates combine with calcium ions to form calcium carbonate shells in marine organisms such as coral and oysters. When these organisms die, their remains can sink and become part of sediment, which may later form limestone, the largest carbon reservoir on Earth.

Large, long-lived trees can store carbon in their bodies for centuries. On much longer time scales, the remains of organisms become fossil fuels, including coal, petroleum, and natural gas, deep in the Earth. Carbon stored underground can return to the surface and atmosphere during volcanic eruptions. Burning fossil fuels and wood releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which affects global climate. Deforestation and increased agricultural practices also change the natural carbon cycle by reducing soil organic matter, lowering carbon storage, and raising greenhouse gases such as methane.
