The Sulfur Cycle

Como uma molécula gasosa, o enxofre circula entre a atmosfera, e os ecossistemas terrestres e aquáticos. Uma forma, o dióxido de enxofre, ou SO2, entra no sistema terrestre a partir da atmosfera, tanto como ácido sulfúrico fraco dissolvido na precipitação ou diretamente depositado em um processo chamado precipitação radioativa. O enxofre, um elemento importante na composição química das proteínas, é reciclado através da atmosfera e ambientes aquáticos e terrestres. Encontrado na atmosfera como dióxido de enxofre (SO2), o enxofre é libertado por organismos em decomposição, rochas intemperadas, fontes geotérmicas, vulcões e combustíveis fósseis queimados. É depositado no ecossistema, entra no seu ciclo através da comunidade biótica, e ou é libertado de volta à atmosfera como gás ou depositado em sedimentos marinhos para armazenamento a longo prazo e eventual libertação de volta para o solo e atmosfera.
 
 <h4>O Ciclo Biogeoquímico do Enxofre </h4>
 
 O enxofre é essencial para sistemas biológicos e é um componente de certos aminoácidos, como a cisteína, que desempenha um papel importante na estrutura das proteínas. O enxofre é distribuído aos ecossistemas terrestres (ou seja, em terra) pela precipitação de ácido sulfúrico fraco, precipitação direta da atmosfera, intemperização de rochas contendo enxofre e fontes geotérmicas.
 
 A partir do solo, é captado por microrganismos e plantas e convertido em formas orgânicas que podem ser utilizadas pelos consumidores no ecossistema. Quando os organismos morrem, os decompositores quebram os compostos orgânicos de enxofre em gases, como sulfeto de hidrogénio, que é oxidado na atmosfera para formar dióxido de enxofre.  <h4>Impactos Humanos no Ciclo do Enxofre</h4>
 
 A queima de combustíveis fósseis, particularmente o carvão, adiciona uma quantidade não natural de gás sulfeto de hidrogénio na atmosfera, resultando em uma maior concentração de dióxido de enxofre que se manifesta como chuva ácida. A chuva ácida prejudica o meio ambiente ao baixar o pH de lagos e rios, prejudicando tanto a fauna aquática como a terrestre.

Sulfur moves through ecosystems as part of the chemical cycle that supports life. It is an important element in proteins and in amino acids such as cysteine, which helps give proteins their structure.

On land, sulfur reaches ecosystems in several ways. Weak sulfuric acid can fall with precipitation, sulfur can drop directly from the atmosphere, rocks can weather and release sulfur, and geothermal vents can add it as well. Plants and microorganisms take sulfur up from the soil and change it into organic forms that consumers can use.

When organisms die, decomposers break down organic sulfur compounds. This process can release gases such as hydrogen sulfide, which is then oxidized in the atmosphere to form sulfur dioxide. Some chemoautotrophs also use sulfur as an energy source, so sulfur can move directly through ecosystems in that way.

Marine ecosystems also receive sulfur from runoff from land, fallout from the atmosphere, and underwater geothermal vents. Some of it moves through the food chain and returns to the atmosphere as sea spray. The rest becomes sediment on the ocean floor, where it can stay for long periods before uplift and erosion return it to land.

Human activity can change this cycle. Burning fossil fuels, especially coal, adds extra hydrogen sulfide gas to the atmosphere and raises sulfur dioxide levels. This can lead to acid rain, which lowers the pH of lakes and rivers and harms both aquatic and terrestrial animals.
