Subatomic Particles

<h4>A Descoberta do Eletrão</h4>

A primeira pista sobre a estrutura subatómica veio no final do século XIX, quando J.J. Thomson descobriu o eletrão usando um tubo de raios catódicos. Este aparelho era constituído por um tubo de vidro selado, do qual quase todo o ar tinha sido retirado, e que continha dois elétrodos metálicos. Quando foi aplicada alta voltagem pelos elétrodos, um feixe visível chamado raio catódico apareceu entre eles. Este feixe foi desviado para a carga positiva e afastado da carga negativa, e foi produzido da mesma forma com propriedades idênticas quando diferentes metais foram utilizados para os elétrodos. Em experiências semelhantes, o raio foi desviado simultaneamente por um campo magnético aplicado. As medidas da extensão da deflexão e da força do campo magnético permitiram que Thomson calculasse a relação carga-massa das partículas dos raios catódicos. Os resultados dessas medições indicaram que essas partículas eram muito mais leves do que os átomos. Com base nas suas observações, Thomson propôs o seguinte:

<li>As partículas são atraídas por cargas positivas (+) e repelidas por cargas negativas (−), pelo que devem ser negativamente carregadas (uma vez que cargas semelhantes se repelem e cargas diferentes se atraem);</li>
<li>As partículas são menos maciças do que átomos e indistinguíveis, independentemente do material de origem, portanto devem ser constituintes subatómicos fundamentais de todos os átomos.</li>
</ul>

A partícula de raios catódicos de Thomson é um eletrão, uma partícula subatómica negativamente carregada, com massa mais de 1000× menor do que a de um átomo. O termo “eletrão” foi cunhado em 1891 pelo físico Irlandês George Stoney, de “iões elétricos”.

Em 1909, Robert A. Millikan calculou a carga de um eletrão através das suas experiências de “gota de óleo”. Millikan criou gotículas de óleo microscópicas, que poderiam ser eletricamente carregadas por fricção à medida que se formavam ou usando raios X. Estas gotículas caíam inicialmente devido à gravidade, mas o seu progresso no sentido descendente podia ser abrandado ou mesmo invertido por um campo elétrico mais abaixo no aparelho. Ao ajustar a força do campo elétrico e fazer medições cuidadosas e cálculos apropriados, Millikan conseguiu determinar que a carga em gotas individuais era de 1,6 × 10−19 C (coulomb). Millikan concluiu que esse valor deve, portanto, ser a carga fundamental de um único eletrão. Uma vez que a carga de um eletrão era agora conhecida devido à pesquisa de Millikan — e a razão carga-massa já era conhecida devido à pesquisa de Thomson (1,759 × 1011 C/kg) — a massa do eletrão foi determinada em 9,107 × 10−31 kg.

<h4>O Modelo Nuclear de Rutherford</h4>

Os cientistas tinham agora estabelecido que o átomo não era indivisível como Dalton havia acreditado, e devido ao trabalho de Thomson, Millikan, e outros, a carga e massa das partículas subatómicas negativas — os eletrões — eram conhecidas. Os cientistas sabiam que a carga geral de um átomo era neutra. Entretanto, a parte positivamente carregada de um átomo ainda não era bem compreendida. Em 1904, Thomson propôs o modelo de “pudim de ameixa” de átomos, que descrevia uma massa positivamente carregada com igual quantidade de carga negativa na forma dos eletrões neles incorporados, uma vez que todos os átomos são eletricamente neutros. Um modelo concorrente havia sido proposto em 1903 por Hantaro Nagaoka, que postulou um átomo tipo Saturno, consistindo de uma esfera positivamente carregada rodeada por um anel de eletrões. 

O grande desenvolvimento seguinte na compreensão do átomo veio de Ernest Rutherford. Ele realizou uma série de experiências utilizando um feixe de partículas alfa de alta velocidade e carga positiva (partículas α), produzidas pelo decaimento radioativo do rádio. Ele apontava um feixe de partículas α para um pedaço muito fino de folha de ouro e examinava a dispersão resultante das partículas α usando uma tela luminescente que brilhava brevemente quando atingida por uma partícula α. Ele observou que a maioria das partículas passava diretamente através da folha sem ser desviada de todo. No entanto, algumas eram ligeiramente desviadas, e um número muito pequeno foi desviado quase diretamente para trás em direção à fonte. 

A partir daí, Rutherford deduziu então o seguinte: Uma vez que a maioria das partículas α de alta velocidade passaram através dos átomos de ouro sem serem desviadas, elas devem ter viajado através de um espaço essencialmente vazio dentro do átomo. As partículas alfa são carregadas positivamente, pelo que as deflexões surgiram quando encontraram outra carga positiva (cargas semelhantes repelem-se umas às outras). Uma vez que cargas semelhantes se repelem umas às outras, as poucas partículas α positivamente carregadas que mudaram abruptamente de caminho devem ter batido em, ou aproximado de perto de, outro corpo que também tinha uma carga positiva altamente concentrada. Uma vez que as deflexões ocorreram em uma pequena fração do tempo, essa carga ocupava apenas uma pequena quantidade do espaço na folha de ouro.

Analisando uma série de experiências, Rutherford tirou duas conclusões importantes:

<ol>
<li>O volume ocupado por um átomo deve consistir em uma grande quantidade de espaço vazio.</li>
<li>Um corpo pequeno, relativamente pesado, positivamente carregado, o núcleo, deve estar no centro de cada átomo.</li>
</ol>

Esta análise levou Rutherford a propor um modelo em que um átomo consistia de um núcleo muito pequeno, positivamente carregado, no qual a maior parte da massa do átomo estaria concentrada, rodeado pelos eletrões negativamente carregados de modo que o átomo fosse eletricamente neutro. Após muitas outras experiências, Rutherford descobriu também que os núcleos de outros elementos contêm o núcleo do hidrogénio como um “bloco de construção”, e nomeou esta partícula mais fundamental de protão, a partícula subatómica positivamente carregada encontrada no núcleo. 

<h4>A Estrutura de um Átomo</h4>

Os protões são encontrados no núcleo de um átomo e têm uma carga positiva. O número de protões é igual ao número atómico na tabela periódica e determina a identidade do elemento. Os neutrões também são encontrados no núcleo. Eles não têm carga, mas têm a mesma massa que os protões e contribuem assim para a massa atómica de um átomo. Os eletrões orbitam em torno do núcleo em nuvens. Têm carga negativa e massa insignificante, contribuindo assim para a carga total de um átomo, mas não para a sua massa.

<h4>Neutrões</h4>

O núcleo era conhecido por conter quase toda a massa de um átomo, com o número de protões a fornecer apenas metade, ou menos, dessa massa. Diferentes propostas foram feitas para explicar o que constituia a massa restante, incluindo a existência de partículas neutras no núcleo. Apenas em 1932 James Chadwick encontrou evidências de neutrões, partículas subatómicas não carregadas, com massa aproximadamente igual à de protões. 

A existência de neutrões explicou também isótopos: Eles diferem em massa porque têm números diferentes de neutrões, mas são quimicamente idênticos porque têm o mesmo número de protões.

<h4>Unidade de Massa Atómica (amu) e a unidade fundamental de carga (e)</h4>

O núcleo contém a maioria da massa de um átomo porque os protões e os neutrões são muito mais pesados do que os eletrões, enquanto que os eletrões ocupam quase todo o volume de um átomo. O diâmetro de um átomo está na ordem de 10−10 m, enquanto que o diâmetro do núcleo é aproximadamente 10−15 m — cerca de 100.000 vezes menor. Os átomos — e os protões, neutrões e eletrões que os compõem — são extremamente pequenos. Por exemplo, um átomo de carbono pesa menos de 2 × 10−23 g, e um eletrão tem uma carga inferior a 2 × 10−19 C. Ao descrever as propriedades de pequenos objetos como átomos, são usadas unidades de medida adequadamente pequenas, como a unidade de massa atómica (amu) e a unidade fundamental de carga (e). A amu é definida em relação ao isótopo mais abundante de carbono, cujos átomos têm massas de exatamente 12 amu. Assim, uma amu é exatamente 1/12 da massa de um átomo de carbono-12: 1 amu = 1,6605 × 10−24 g. O Dalton (Da) e a unidade de massa atómica unificada (u) são unidades alternativas que são equivalentes à amu.

A unidade fundamental de carga (também chamada de carga elementar) é igual à magnitude da carga de um eletrão com e = 1,602 × 10−19 C. Um protão tem uma massa de 1,0073 amu e uma carga de 1+. Um neutrão é uma partícula ligeiramente mais pesada com uma massa de 1,0087 amu e uma carga de zero; como o seu nome sugere, é neutro. O eletrão tem uma carga de 1− e é uma partícula muito mais leve com uma massa de cerca de 0,00055 amu. Para referência, seriam necessários cerca de 1800 eletrões para igualar a massa de um protão. Atomic structure is built from three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Atoms make up all matter, and these particles explain an atom’s mass and charge.

The electron was first identified at the end of the 19th century by J.J. Thomson. He used a cathode ray tube, a sealed glass tube with almost all the air removed and two metal electrodes. When high voltage was applied, a visible beam called a cathode ray formed. The beam bent toward positive charge and away from negative charge. It also behaved the same way no matter which metal was used. In related experiments, a magnetic field also deflected the ray. Thomson used these results to calculate a charge-to-mass ratio and showed that the particles were much lighter than atoms. He concluded that the particles were negatively charged, smaller than atoms, and present in all atoms. That particle is now called the electron.

Robert A. Millikan later measured the charge of the electron with his oil drop experiments in 1909. He made tiny oil droplets that could gain charge from friction or X-rays. Gravity pulled the droplets downward, but an electric field could slow them or reverse their motion. From careful measurements, Millikan found a charge of 1.6 × 10−19 C for a single drop. He concluded that this was the charge of one electron. With Thomson’s charge-to-mass ratio and Millikan’s charge value, the mass of the electron was calculated to be 9.107 × 10−31 kg.

These discoveries showed that Dalton’s atom was not indivisible. Scientists also explored how positive charge is arranged in the atom. Thomson proposed the plum pudding model in 1904, where electrons were embedded in a positively charged mass. In 1903, Hantaro Nagaoka suggested a Saturn-like atom with electrons around a positive sphere. Ernest Rutherford later tested the atom with alpha particle scattering. He aimed fast, positively charged alpha particles at thin gold foil and observed them with a glowing screen. Most particles passed through without deflection. Some were turned slightly, and a very small number bounced almost straight back. Rutherford concluded that atoms contain a lot of empty space and that a small, heavy, positively charged nucleus sits at the center.

Rutherford’s model placed most of an atom’s mass in the nucleus and the electrons around it so the atom stayed neutral. He also found that nuclei of other elements contain the hydrogen nucleus as a building block and named that particle the proton. Protons have a positive charge and are found in the nucleus. The number of protons equals the atomic number on the periodic table and identifies the element. Neutrons are also in the nucleus. They have no charge but have about the same mass as protons, so they add to atomic mass. Electrons move in clouds around the nucleus. They have a negative charge and very little mass, so they affect charge more than mass.

James Chadwick provided evidence for neutrons in 1932. Neutrons are uncharged subatomic particles with a mass similar to protons. Their discovery helped explain isotopes. Isotopes have different masses because they have different numbers of neutrons, but they are chemically identical because they have the same number of protons.

Atoms are extremely small, so chemists use smaller units such as the atomic mass unit, or amu, and the fundamental unit of charge, e. The nucleus is about 100,000 times smaller in diameter than the atom, but it contains most of the mass because protons and neutrons are much heavier than electrons. One amu is defined as 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom, and 1 amu equals 1.6605 × 10−24 g. The fundamental charge equals the charge of an electron, 1.602 × 10−19 C. A proton has a mass of 1.0073 amu and a charge of 1+. A neutron has a mass of 1.0087 amu and a charge of 0. An electron has a mass of about 0.00055 amu and a charge of 1−. About 1800 electrons have the mass of one proton.
