Formal Charges

<h4>Cálculo da Carga Formal</h4>

<h4>Cálculo da Carga Formal das Estruturas de Lewis</h4>

Passo 1. Divida os pares de eletrões das ligações de forma igual para todas as ligações I–Cl:

Passo 2. Atribua pares solitários de eletrões aos seus átomos. Cada átomo de cloro tem agora sete eletrões atribuídos a ele e o átomo de iodo tem oito.

Passo 3. Subtraia este número do número de eletrões de valência para o átomo neutro: 
Iodo: 7 – 8 = –1 
Cloro: 7 – 7 = 0 
A soma das cargas formais de todos os átomos é igual a –1, que é idêntica à carga do ião (–1).

<h4>Uso da Carga Formal para Prever a Estrutura Molecular</h4>

O arranjo de átomos em uma molécula ou ião é chamado a sua estrutura molecular. Em muitos casos, seguir os passos para escrever estruturas de Lewis pode levar a mais de uma possível estrutura molecular — múltiplas ligações e colocações de pares de eletrões solitários diferentes ou diferentes arranjos de átomos, por exemplo. Algumas diretrizes que envolvem carga formal podem ser úteis para decidir qual das estruturas possíveis é mais provável para uma determinada molécula ou ião:

<li>Se a estrutura de Lewis precisar ter cargas formais diferentes de zero, o arranjo com as menores cargas formais diferentes de zero é preferível.</li>
<li>As estruturas de Lewis são preferíveis quando as cargas formais adjacentes são zero ou do sinal oposto.</li>
<li>Ao escolher entre várias estruturas de Lewis com distribuições semelhantes de cargas formais, a estrutura com as cargas formais negativas nos átomos mais eletronegativos é preferível.</li>
</ol>

Para ver como estas orientações se aplicam, considere algumas estruturas possíveis para o dióxido de carbono, CO2. Sabe-se que o átomo menos eletronegativo normalmente ocupa a posição central, mas as cargas formais ajudam a entender por que isso ocorre. Podem ser desenhadas três possibilidades para a estrutura: o carbono no centro com duas ligações duplas, o carbono no centro com uma ligação simples e uma tripla, e o oxigénio no centro com ligações duplas.

Ao comparar as três cargas formais, a estrutura à esquerda pode ser identificada como preferível, uma vez que só tem cargas formais de zero.

Como outro exemplo, o ião tiocianato, um ião formado a partir de um átomo de carbono, um átomo de azoto, e um átomo de enxofre, poderia ter três estruturas moleculares diferentes: NCS–, CNS–, ou CSN–. As cargas formais presentes em cada uma dessas estruturas moleculares podem ajudar a escolher o arranjo mais provável de átomos. Possíveis estruturas de Lewis e as cargas formais para cada uma das três estruturas possíveis para o ião tiocianato são - carbono no centro com ligações duplas, azoto no centro com ligações duplas, e enxofre no centro com ligações duplas.

Note que a soma das taxas formais em cada caso é igual à carga do ião (–1). Lewis structures can sometimes show more than one reasonable arrangement for a molecule or polyatomic ion. Formal charge helps chemists choose the best Lewis structure when that happens. It is a useful way to compare possible structures in chemistry.

Formal charge is the hypothetical charge an atom would have if bonding electrons were shared evenly between the atoms. It can also be found by starting with the valence electrons of the neutral atom, subtracting the nonbonding electrons, and then subtracting the number of bonds on that atom in the Lewis structure. This is a bookkeeping tool, not the actual charge on the atom.

The formal charge of a full structure should also be checked as a whole. For a neutral molecule, the sum of all formal charges must be zero. For an ion, the sum of all formal charges should match the ion’s overall charge.

A common example is the interhalogen ion ICl4−. To assign formal charges, the bonding electron pairs are divided equally among the I–Cl bonds. Then lone pairs are assigned to their atoms. In this structure, each chlorine has seven electrons assigned to it, and iodine has eight. That gives iodine a formal charge of −1 and each chlorine a formal charge of 0, which adds up to the −1 charge of the ion.

Formal charge also helps predict molecular structure when several Lewis structures are possible. A structure with all formal charges equal to zero is preferred over one with nonzero charges. If nonzero charges are needed, the best choice has the smallest charges possible. Structures are also preferred when adjacent formal charges are zero or opposite in sign. When several choices are still possible, the negative charge should be on the more electronegative atom.

Carbon dioxide shows why these rules matter. One possible structure has carbon in the center with two double bonds. Other possibilities place carbon between a single and a triple bond, or place oxygen in the center with double bonds. The structure with carbon in the center and two double bonds is preferred because all of its formal charges are zero.

The thiocyanate ion, NCS−, gives another clear example. It can be written with carbon, nitrogen, or sulfur in the center. The formal charges in each possible Lewis structure help identify the most likely arrangement of atoms. The carbon-centered structure is preferred because it has the fewest atoms with nonzero formal charges. It also places the least electronegative atom in the center and the negative charge on the more electronegative element.
