Polygenic Traits

Quando múltiplos genes colaboram para influenciar um fenótipo, o resultado é um traço poligénico, ou com muitos genes. Uma dessas características é a altura humana, que se acredita ser influenciada por centenas de locus. Embora cada gene geralmente tem um papel mínimo na determinação da altura, seus efeitos se somam para estabelecer o quão grande um indivíduo será na idade adulta.Em parte, devido ao grande número de genes envolvidos, a altura humana varia consideravelmente. Por exemplo, a altura mínima de mulheres adultas numa população pode ser aproximadamente cinco pés, enquanto o máximo é cerca de seis. No entanto, mulheres de todos os tamanhos intermediários existem.Representando graficamente essa distribuição de altura revelamos uma curva em forma de sino. Apenas algumas mulheres se aproximam do mínimo ou do máximo, e a maioria está perto da média, um metro e meio de altura. Quando mais de um gene é responsável por um determinado fenótipo, a característica é considerada poligénica. A altura humana é uma característica poligénica. Estudos descobriram centenas de loci que influenciam a altura, e acredita-se que haja muitos mais. Devido ao elevado número de genes envolvidos, bem como fatores ambientais e nutricionais, a altura varia significativamente dentro de uma determinada população. A distribuição da altura forma uma curva em forma de sino, com relativamente poucos indivíduos da população nas alturas mínimas ou máximas e a maior parte da população na faixa de altura média. A maioria das características poligénicas, como peso, pressão arterial e aspectos dos padrões de impressões digitais, também se representam como curvas em forma de sino.
 
 <h4>Altura Humana—uma Característica Poligénica</h4>
 
 Embora o trabalho seminal de Mendel sobre hereditariedade genética se concentre em características derivadas de genes únicos, experiências como estudos de associação de todo o genoma revelaram que muitas características humanas se desenvolvem através da cooperação de múltiplos produtos genéticos. Polygenic traits are characteristics shaped by many genes acting together. This pattern is different from a single-gene trait, where one gene has a larger effect on the outcome. In polygenic inheritance, each gene adds a small contribution to the final trait.

Height is a common example of a polygenic trait. Many genes influence human height, so the result can vary across a wide range. These small genetic effects combine to produce differences that are easy to see in a population.

Polygenic traits help show why inherited traits are not always simple. The final appearance of a trait depends on the combined effects of several genes. This makes polygenic inheritance an important idea in genetics, especially when studying traits with many possible outcomes.
