Em alcanos lineares, a fragmentação de íons moleculares, que são cátions radicais formados pela remoção de um único elétron de uma molécula-mãe, ocorre predominantemente longe do final da cadeia para formar carbocátions e radicais estáveis.
Por exemplo, considere o espectro de massa do hexano. Os picos proeminentes são separados por 14 u, indicando a possibilidade de fragmentação inicial em diferentes ligações carbono-carbono adjacentes em hexano.
A fragmentação entre um carbono terminal e seu carbono adjacente é menos viável devido ao instável carbocátion de metila ou ao radical metil gerado. Se essa fragmentação ocorrer, uma formação de radical metil é priorizada sobre o carbocátion de metila.
A lógica dita que a fragmentação mais viável resulta no carbocátion mais estável, expulsando o radical mais estável. Nos espectros de massa hexânica, o carbocátion butílico é o mais abundante e se torna o pico de base.

Mass Spectrometry: Long-Chain Alkane Fragmentation

Os íons moleculares de alcanos lineares preferem se fragmentar na ligação carbono-carbono longe da extremidade da cadeia, já que a clivagem de uma ligação interna cria um carbocátion estável e um radical estável. Consequentemente, os sinais de massa de alcanos lineares apresentam picos intensos no meio do gráfico da relação massa-carga com picos mais fracos em cada extremidade. A fragmentação de cada ligação carbono-carbono com a liberação de um grupo metila em cada divisão leva a picos proeminentes nos espectros de massa separados por 14 u. Sinais de massa menores perto de cada pico proeminente resultam da fragmentação secundária na ligação carbono-hidrogênio.

Por exemplo, considere o padrão de fragmentação do n-hexano mostrado na Figura 1 e os espectros de massa correspondentes na Figura 2.

Os sinais em uma relação massa-carga de 71, 57, 43, 29 e 15 indicam que a clivagem pode ocorrer em todas as ligações carbono-carbono na molécula. No entanto, a abundância relativa desses picos varia. A diferença entre o sinal do íon molecular e o sinal em 71 indica a separação de grupos metil (PM = 15 u) dos íons moleculares. A liberação posterior de um grupo CH2 daquele fragmento (PM = 14 u) resulta em um sinal em 57. Os sinais em 43, 29 e 15 são devidos às liberações subsequentes de grupos CH2. A abundância de sinais em 15 e 71 é mínima devido à menor probabilidade de formação de carbocátion metila instável ou de um radical metila, respectivamente. O pico base em 43 indica a fragmentação mais preferida, que produz um par de carbocátion e radical estáveis.

Mass spectra of linear alkanes show a clear fragmentation pattern. The molecular ion often breaks at a carbon-carbon bond away from the end of the chain. This cleavage forms a stable carbocation and a stable radical, so the middle of the mass-to-charge plot usually has the strongest signals while the ends are weaker.

As each bond breaks, a methyl group is lost and the main peaks in the spectrum appear 14 u apart. Smaller peaks near each main signal can also appear. These come from secondary fragmentation at a carbon-hydrogen bond.

n-Hexane shows this pattern well. Its spectrum has signals at mass-to-charge ratios of 71, 57, 43, 29, and 15. These peaks show that cleavage can happen at every carbon-carbon bond in the molecule, but the peak heights are not the same.

The difference between the molecular ion signal and the signal at 71 shows loss of a methyl group with a mass of 15 u. Loss of another CH2 group with a mass of 14 u gives the signal at 57. The signals at 43, 29, and 15 come from later CH2 losses.

The peaks at 15 and 71 are small because forming a methyl carbocation or a methyl radical is least likely. The base peak at 43 is the most favored fragmentation. It gives the most stable pair of carbocation and radical.

Cycloalkenes can break apart in a mass spectrometer through retro-Diels–Alder fragmentation. In this process, two carbon-carbon bonds in the ring split, and ethene is released.
