Genome Size and the Evolution of New Genes

Outra forma de criar um novo gene são recombinações do DNA, onde segmentos de um gene existente ou cópia gênica são separados e movem-se para aderir os de um gene diferente, fazendo um gene híbrido que pode assumir uma nova função. Mutação intragênica, as alterações numa sequência genética introduzida por mutações ao longo do tempo, é responsável por muitos novos genes.Esta divergência é mais percetível ao comparar espécies ou linhagens que são divergentes, independentemente. Uma vez que esta divergência vai além de um determinado ponto ou um gene assume uma nova função. Eles podem ser classificados como genes diferentes inteiramente.Finalmente, a transferência genética horizontal traz um novo gene ou sequências genes para o genoma de fontes externas, como outros indivíduos e mesmo outras espécies. Embora todo organismo vivo tenha algum tipo de genoma (seja RNA ou DNA), há uma variação considerável nos tamanhos desses projetos. Um fator importante que afeta o tamanho do genoma é se o organismo é procarionte ou eucarionte. Nos procariontes, o genoma contém pouca ou nenhuma sequência não codificante, de modo que os genes estão fortemente agrupados em grupos ou operons ao longo do cromossomo. Por outro lado, os genes nos eucariontes são pontuados por longos trechos de sequências não codificantes. No geral, isso contribui para o fenômeno de que os genomas procariontes tendem a ser menores (isto é, contêm menos bases) em média do que os dos eucariontes. Não é novidade que, dada esta observação, os menores genomas conhecidos são principalmente procariontes. Candidatus Carsonella rudii, por exemplo, é uma proteobactéria altamente simplificada que possui um genoma de apenas 160 mil pares de bases.
