Acceleration due to Gravity on Earth

Um objeto é considerado em queda livre quando a única força que atua sobre ele é a força gravitacional da Terra. A aceleração de tal objeto em queda livre é chamada de aceleração devido à gravidade, denotada por g.
De acordo com a segunda lei do movimento de Newton, a magnitude da força que atua sobre o objeto é igual à sua massa vezes sua aceleração. Também é conhecido como o peso do objeto.
Igualando mg com a equação da força gravitacional, a aceleração devido à gravidade do objeto pode ser expressa como o produto da constante gravitacional e da massa da Terra, dividida pelo quadrado de sua distância do centro da Terra.
O valor médio medido de g próximo à superfície da Terra é de 9,8 m/s2. Como g é independente da massa do objeto, todas as massas próximas à superfície da Terra caem em queda livre com a mesma aceleração.
Portanto, substituindo os valores de aceleração devido à gravidade, a constante gravitacional e a distância como o raio da Terra, a massa da Terra é estimada em 5,97 × 1024 kg.

Gravity near Earth gives objects a downward acceleration called acceleration due to gravity. It comes from Earth’s gravitational pull and points toward the center of the Earth. Newton’s law of gravitation shows that the gravitational force depends on mass, while Newton’s second law shows that the acceleration produced by a force depends on how that force acts on the object.

Because of this relationship, the acceleration due to gravity is independent of an object’s mass. An object and the Earth pull on each other with equal force in opposite directions. But Earth’s mass is so large compared with ordinary objects that Earth’s acceleration is negligible.

For problems on or near Earth’s surface, Earth can be treated as an inertial frame of reference. That makes it a useful frame for studying motion. The acceleration due to gravity near the surface is about 9.80 m/s², and it can usually be taken as constant when the object stays close to the ground.

This approximation works even for tall places like Mount Everest. It does not hold as well far above Earth, where gravity changes at distances hundreds of kilometers from the surface. Gravity also varies from the equator to the poles because Earth rotates about its axis.

The value of g is linked to Earth’s mass and average radius through the gravitational constant. If one of these quantities is known, the other can be estimated. For example, if Earth’s radius is measured geometrically, Earth’s mass can also be found.
