Energy of a Satellite in a Circular Orbit

Considere um satélite artificial orbitando a Terra em uma órbita perfeitamente circular sob a influência da força gravitacional da Terra.
Portanto, ele orbita com velocidade crítica vc, que é igual à raiz quadrada do produto da constante gravitacional e a massa da Terra, dividida por sua distância total do centro da Terra.
Agora, elevando-se e multiplicando-se a equação da velocidade crítica pela metade da massa do satélite, obtém-se a energia cinética do satélite em órbita circular.
Lembre-se de que a energia potencial do satélite é expressa como o produto negativo da constante gravitacional e das duas massas, dividido pela distância entre elas.

Satellite orbits and energy in space depend on altitude, orbit shape, and gravity. Thousands of artificial satellites circle Earth every day at many different distances. Satellites below 1,600 km are in low-Earth orbit, or LEO.

Research satellites and Earth observation satellites are usually placed in LEO. They mostly move in elliptical orbits, which are oval-shaped paths. Navigation satellites are placed in medium-Earth orbit, or MEO, which ranges from 2,000 km to 36,000 km above Earth’s surface.

Communication satellites usually orbit at about 36,000 km in geostationary or geosynchronous Earth orbit, or GEO. These satellites mostly follow circular orbits. Their orbital period matches Earth’s rotation period.

The total energy of a satellite in a circular orbit stays conserved. It can be derived using Newton’s law of gravitation. In this type of orbit, the satellite’s kinetic energy is numerically half its potential energy.

Because of that relationship, the total energy equals the negative of the kinetic energy. The negative sign shows that the satellite is gravitationally bound to Earth. In elliptical orbits, the satellite’s distance from Earth changes at every moment.

As that distance changes, both kinetic energy and potential energy change too. Even so, the total energy, which is the sum of kinetic and potential energy, remains constant.
