Interference and Superposition of Waves

Quando duas ondas estão fisicamente presentes no mesmo local, a perturbação resultante é uma terceira onda. Esse efeito é chamado de interferência.
Matematicamente, a interferência pode ser descrita pelo princípio da superposição. Ele afirma que se duas ou mais ondas se sobrepõem no mesmo ponto, a onda resultante é a soma algébrica das ondas individuais.
Ao tomar a soma algébrica, tanto a amplitude quanto a fase precisam ser consideradas.
Quando duas ondas se sobrepõem em um ponto com a mesma fase, a onda resultante tem uma amplitude igual à soma das amplitudes da onda individual. Esse fenômeno é chamado de interferência construtiva.

A interferência ocorre em ondas mecânicas, como ondas sonoras, ondas em uma corda e ondas na superfície da água. Ondas mecânicas correspondem ao deslocamento físico de partículas. Portanto, a interferência implica que o deslocamento físico das partículas de um meio é dado pela soma algébrica dos deslocamentos causados pelas ondas individuais. Wave interference patterns form when two waves of the same nature occupy the same region at the same time. The combined effect is the sum of the individual wave effects. Interference does not mean that one wave changes how the other wave travels.

This idea applies to mechanical waves, including sound waves, waves on a string, and surface water waves. Mechanical waves move through a medium, so interference shows up as the algebraic sum of particle displacements in that medium. The same principle also applies to electromagnetic waves, where the electric and magnetic fields add together vectorially.

Not every wave follows simple superposition. For some waves, the result is not just a direct sum of the separate waves. These are nonlinear waves, and their behavior is harder to describe.

Interference can create alternating bands of constructive and destructive interference. These bands form an interference pattern, which is a clear sign that wave behavior is present in nature.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions. A simplified surface water wave is a good example. The water moves up and down, while the wave disturbance travels horizontally through the medium.
