Propagation of Waves

Uma onda pode se propagar de um meio para outro, cada um com uma densidade diferente. Nesse caso, a onda incidente é parcialmente propagada e parcialmente refletida.
A velocidade de propagação da onda seria relativamente menor no meio mais denso do que no meio mais raro.
Uma quantidade de índice de refração compara a velocidade das ondas eletromagnéticas em diferentes meios. É expresso como a razão entre a velocidade da luz no vácuo e a velocidade da luz em um determinado meio.
Se a onda viaja do meio mais denso para o meio mais raro, as ondas refletidas e transmitidas estão em fase com a onda incidente, mas sua amplitude é reduzida.

Nesse caso, a onda refletida está fora de fase em relação à onda incidente, no entanto, a onda transmitida está em fase com a onda incidente. Tanto a onda refletida quanto a onda transmitida têm amplitudes menores do que a amplitude da onda incidente. Se a tensão em ambas as cordas for a mesma, a velocidade da onda é menor na corda com maior densidade linear de massa.

Por outro lado, considere a propagação de ondas de uma corda de alta densidade linear de massa para uma corda de baixa densidade linear de massa. Wave reflection and transmission happen when a wave moves from one medium to another. At the boundary, part of the wave can bounce back into the first medium, and part can pass into the second medium. The interface between the two media then acts like a boundary that is neither fixed nor free.

The wave behavior depends on the change in linear mass density of the strings. When a wave travels from a string with low linear mass density to a string with high linear mass density, the reflected wave is out of phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave stays in phase with the incident wave. In this case, both reflected and transmitted waves have smaller amplitudes than the incoming wave.

If the tension in both strings is the same, the wave speed is lower in the string with higher linear mass density. The opposite change gives a different phase result. When a wave moves from a string with high linear mass density to a string with low linear mass density, the reflected wave is in phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave is also in phase, and both waves again have amplitudes smaller than the incident wave.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions.
