What is a Frequency Distribution

Considere um grupo de 50 pessoas participando de uma maratona. Suponha que os organizadores da maratona queiram saber como o número de participantes varia com a idade.
Para descobrir, os dados são resumidos usando uma tabela de distribuição de frequência. É uma ferramenta estatística que representa dados divididos entre várias categorias ou classes em relação ao número de valores para cada classe chamado de frequência.
As tabelas de frequência ajudam a entender as ocorrências e a distribuição de dados no conjunto de dados.

Uma frequência é o número de vezes que um valor dos dados ocorre. A soma de todos os valores de frequência representa o número total de alunos incluídos na amostra. É comumente usado para agrupar dados de tipos quantitativos. As distribuições de frequência podem ser exibidas em uma tabela, histograma, gráfico de linhas, gráfico de pontos ou gráfico de pizza, apenas para citar alguns. Um histograma é uma representação gráfica de frequências tabuladas, mostradas como retângulos adjacentes, erguidos sobre intervalos discretos (‘’bins’’), com área igual à frequência das observações no intervalo.

Em uma tabela de distribuição de frequência, os valores dos dados são agrupados em classes de larguras iguais. Frequency distributions organize quantitative data by showing how often each value appears. A frequency is the number of times a data value occurs. When the frequency values are added together, the total equals the number of students in the sample.

These distributions are useful for grouping numerical data into clear patterns. They can be shown in a table, histogram, line graph, dot plot, or pie chart. A histogram displays tabulated frequencies as adjacent rectangles over discrete intervals, or bins. The area of each bar matches the frequency of the observations in that interval.

A frequency distribution table groups data values into classes of equal width. Class limits are the smallest and largest observations in each class. Class boundaries are the values used to separate neighboring classes, often at the midpoint between upper and lower class limits. In many cases, frequency distributions use 5 to 20 classes. The classes should have equal widths and should be mutually exclusive, continuous, and exhaustive.
