First Law of Thermodynamics

Considere uma lanterna do céu com uma vela. O calor da vela aumenta a energia interna das moléculas de ar dentro da lanterna, o que provoca a expansão do ar e infla a lanterna. Devido à expansão, o trabalho é feito pelas moléculas de ar na lanterna. A densidade do ar dentro da lanterna inflada é reduzida, o que cria sustentação.
Neste exemplo, a mudança na energia interna do sistema é igual à transferência líquida de calor para o sistema menos o trabalho líquido realizado pelo sistema. Esta equação é uma forma generalizada de conservação de energia conhecida como a primeira lei da termodinâmica.
Convencionalmente, Q é positivo ou negativo, dependendo se o calor é adicionado ao sistema ou removido do sistema. Além disso, W é positivo quando o trabalho é feito pelo sistema e negativo quando o trabalho é feito no sistema.
Para qualquer processo termodinâmico, a mudança na energia interna é independente do caminho e depende apenas dos estados de equilíbrio inicial e final do sistema. Assim, a energia interna é uma função de estado.

Uma mudança na energia interna de um sistema depende da transferência resultante de calor para o sistema e do trabalho resultante realizado pelo sistema. A primeira lei da termodinâmica, que é uma forma generalizada de conservação de energia, relaciona matematicamente essas três quantidades. Ela afirma que a mudança na energia interna é igual à diferença entre a transferência de calor e o trabalho realizado pelo sistema.

O calor aplicado aumenta a energia interna de um sistema. Portanto, convencionalmente, o calor é considerado positivo quando adicionado ao sistema e negativo quando removido do sistema. Quando um gás se expande, ele realiza trabalho e sua energia interna diminui. Assim, o trabalho é considerado positivo quando realizado pelo sistema e negativo quando realizado sobre o sistema.

Embora calor e trabalho dependam do caminho termodinâmico percorrido entre dois estados de equilíbrio, a mudança na energia interna depende apenas dos estados de equilíbrio inicial e final do sistema. Semelhante à mudança na energia potencial, a mudança na energia interna é uma quantidade independente do caminho percorrido. A energia interna é uma função de variáveis termodinâmicas como pressão, temperatura e volume. Funções como energia interna e energia potencial são conhecidas como funções de estado porque seus valores dependem exclusivamente do estado do sistema.

Heat, work, and internal energy are linked by the first law of thermodynamics. This law is a generalized form of energy conservation. It explains how energy changes when heat is added to or removed from a system, and when the system does work or has work done on it.

The change in internal energy equals the heat transferred into the system minus the work done by the system. Added heat increases internal energy. For that reason, heat is taken as positive when it enters the system and negative when it leaves.

Work follows the same sign idea. When a gas expands, it does work on its surroundings, and its internal energy decreases. So work is positive when done by the system and negative when done on the system.

Heat and work depend on the path taken between two equilibrium states. Internal energy does not. It depends only on the initial and final equilibrium states, so it is a path-independent quantity, like potential energy.

Internal energy is a function of thermodynamic variables such as pressure, temperature, and volume. Quantities like internal energy and potential energy are called state functions because their values depend only on the state of the system.
