Cyclic Processes And Isolated Systems

Um sistema que não troca calor e não faz nenhum trabalho em seus arredores é chamado de sistema isolado. A mudança na energia interna para tais sistemas é zero.
Em sistemas não isolados, a energia interna só pode ser constante se o processo seguido for cíclico.
Suponha que um sistema termodinâmico, como o ar dentro dos pulmões, na pressão e volume iniciais, expandido para um novo estado final, retorne ao seu estado inicial em um processo termodinâmico. Esse processo é chamado de processo cíclico. 
Nesse processo, a energia interna do gás permanece constante; portanto, o trabalho realizado é igual à transferência líquida de calor.
Em um diagrama pV, esse processo cíclico é representado por um caminho fechado. Suponha que o trabalho feito ao longo do primeiro caminho seja W1 e o trabalho feito ao longo do segundo caminho seja W2. O trabalho de rede feito em um processo cíclico é representado pela área entre esses dois caminhos fechados.
É positivo se o processo segue um ciclo no sentido horário e é negativo quando segue um ciclo no sentido anti-horário.

No caso de um sistema não-isolado, a mudança na energia interna é zero apenas se o processo for cíclico. Um processo termodinâmico é considerado cíclico se o sistema passar por uma série de mudanças e voltar ao seu estado inicial.

Considere um processo cíclico que retorna ao seu estado inicial, passando por um processo de quatro etapas. A transferência de calor ao longo de cada caminho é de 40 J, -80 J, -20 J e 100 J. Qual é o trabalho líquido realizado para esse processo?

As quantidades conhecidas são a transferência de calor para cada etapa. A quantidade desconhecida é a quantidade total resultante de trabalho realizada para esse processo cíclico.

De acordo com a primeira lei da termodinâmica, a mudança na energia interna do sistema é a diferença entre a transferência de calor resultante para o sistema e o trabalho resultante realizado pelo sistema. Como a mudança na energia interna é zero, a quantidade resultante de trabalho realizado é igual à transferência líquida de calor. A transferência líquida de calor é a soma da transferência de calor para cada caminho, que é igual a 40 J. Portanto, o trabalho líquido realizado é de 40 J.

O trabalho resultante positivo realizado implica que o trabalho realizado pelo sistema é maior do que o trabalho realizado sobre o sistema. A energia térmica fornecida ao sistema é usada pelo sistema para realizar o trabalho externo.

A cyclic thermodynamic process returns a system to its initial state. In a cycle, the change in internal energy is zero. An isolated system is different because it has zero heat exchange and zero work, so its internal energy stays constant.

For a non-isolated system, the internal energy change is zero only when the process is cyclic. The first law of thermodynamics relates internal energy, heat transfer, and work. It states that the change in internal energy is the difference between the net heat transferred into the system and the net work done by the system.

The example here uses a four-step cyclic process. The heat transfer along the four paths is 40 J, -80 J, -20 J, and 100 J. The question is to find the net work done for the full cycle. The net heat transfer is the sum of the heat for each step, which is 40 J.

Because the process is cyclic, the change in internal energy is zero. That means the net work done equals the net heat transfer. So the net work done is 40 J. This positive value means the system does more work than work done on it. The heat energy supplied to the system is used to do external work.
