Nas células eucarióticas, a maior parte do ciclo celular é a interfase, que é dividida em três estágios, G1, S e G2.
 Em G1, a primeira fase de lacuna, uma célula-filha recém-gerada cresce em tamanho e se prepara para a duplicação de DNA na próxima fase.
Agora, em S, a fase de síntese, as células duplicam seu DNA nuclear, que permanece empacotado como cromatina. As células também duplicam os centrossomas, a estrutura organizadora dos microtúbulos que forma o aparato do fuso mitótico.
Finalmente, no G2, a segunda fase de lacuna, as células continuam a crescer, multiplicam organelas e proteínas necessárias para a mitose e reabastecem seus estoques de energia. A célula está agora pronta para entrar no primeiro estágio da mitose.

Interphase

O ciclo celular ocorre durante aproximadamente 24 horas (em uma célula humana típica) e em dois estágios distintos: interfase, que inclui três fases do ciclo celular (G1, S e G2) e mitose (M). Durante a interfase, que ocupa cerca de 95% da duração do ciclo celular eucariótico, as células crescem e replicam o seu DNA em preparação para a mitose.

 Fases da Interfase

 Após cada período de mitose e citocinese, as células eucarióticas entram na interfase, durante a qual crescem e replicam seu DNA em preparação para a próxima divisão mitótica.

 Durante a fase G1 (gap 1), as células crescem continuamente e se preparam para a replicação do DNA. Durante esta fase, as células são metabolicamente ativas e copiam organelas essenciais e moléculas bioquímicas, como proteínas.

 Na fase S (síntese) da interfase, as células duplicam seu DNA nuclear, que permanece embalado em cromatina semicondensada. Durante a fase S, as células também duplicam o centrossoma, uma estrutura organizadora de microtúbulos que forma o aparelho do fuso mitótico. O fuso mitótico separa os cromossomos durante a mitose.

 Na fase G2 (gap 2), que se segue à síntese do DNA, as células continuam a crescer e a sintetizar proteínas e organelas para se prepararem para a mitose.

 Nas células humanas, a fase G1 dura aproximadamente 11 horas, a fase S leva cerca de 8 horas e a fase G2 dura cerca de 4 horas. Durante a G1, as células são diploides (2n, um par de cada cromossomo). Após a replicação na fase S, as células aumentam o seu conteúdo de DNA para 4n. As células permanecem 4n até a citocinese, momento em que seu conteúdo de DNA é reduzido para 2n.
