Maxwell's Thermodynamic Relations

Considere a forma diferencial dos potenciais termodinâmicos; As equações de Maxwell podem ser derivadas de potenciais termodinâmicos.
A energia interna é uma função da entropia e do volume. Por ser um diferencial exato, sua derivada de segunda ordem em relação ao volume e à entropia não depende da ordem de diferenciação.
Substituindo as expressões de temperatura e pressão obtém-se a primeira relação de Maxwell.
A entalpia depende da entropia e da pressão. Tomando a derivada de segunda ordem e substituindo as expressões para temperatura e volume, obtém-se a segunda relação de Maxwell.
A energia livre de Helmholtz depende do volume e da temperatura. Expressando-o como uma derivada de segunda ordem e substituindo as expressões de pressão e entropia, obtém-se a relação de Maxwell da terceira.
A energia livre de Gibbs é uma função da pressão e da temperatura. Diferenciando-o duas vezes e substituindo as relações de volume e entropia, obtém-se a quarta relação de Maxwell.
As equações de Maxwell são usadas para resolver problemas termodinâmicos complexos, pois relacionam um diferencial parcial entre quantidades que são difíceis de medir experimentalmente com um diferencial parcial entre quantidades facilmente mensuráveis.

As relações termodinâmicas de Maxwell são muito úteis na resolução de problemas em termodinâmica. Cada uma das relações de Maxwell relaciona uma derivada parcial entre quantidades que podem ser difíceis de medir experimentalmente a uma derivada parcial entre quantidades que podem ser facilmente medidas. Essas relações são um conjunto de equações deriváveis da simetria das segundas derivadas e dos potenciais termodinâmicos.

Todos os potenciais termodinâmicos são diferenciais exatas. Portanto, a segunda derivada deles não depende da ordem de diferenciação. No caso das relações de Maxwell, o potencial termodinâmico é expresso em termos das derivadas parciais dessa função. Substituir os valores das derivadas parciais fornece as equações de Maxwell. Maxwell's thermodynamic relations help solve problems in thermodynamics. They connect partial differentials for quantities that are hard to measure in the lab with quantities that are easier to measure. This makes them useful for working with temperature, pressure, volume, and entropy.

These relations come from thermodynamic potentials and the symmetry of second derivatives. Thermodynamic potentials are exact differentials, so the order of second differentiation does not change the result. When the partial derivatives of these functions are substituted, Maxwell's equations are obtained.

There are four Maxwell's relations. Together, they link changes in entropy, which are difficult to measure, to changes in other thermodynamic variables that are easier to observe. For example, one relation gives the change in pressure with temperature at constant volume. That term can be measured in the laboratory. The matching entropy term with volume at constant temperature is harder to measure directly.

A. Energy is involved in all physical and chemical processes. It is conserved, and can be transformed from one form to another and into work. At the atomic and nuclear levels energy is not continuous but exists in discrete amounts. Energy and mass are related through Einstein's equation E=mc2.

C. Changes in entropy and energy that accompany chemical reactions influence reaction paths. Chemical reactions result in the release or absorption of energy.
