Radiation Pressure: Problem Solving

Considere um satélite orbitando a Terra. Sua distância do sol é de 1,5 X 1011 metros. O sol irradia com uma potência média de 3,8 X 1026 watts.

A intensidade da radiação solar é igual à energia solar média por unidade de área. Seu valor no satélite é, portanto, 1,3 X 103 watts por metro quadrado.

A pressão de radiação aplicada por uma onda eletromagnética em uma superfície perfeitamente absorvente é igual à densidade de energia da onda. O momento da onda também é transferido para a superfície quando uma onda eletromagnética é totalmente absorvida por ela. A taxa em que o momento é transmitido para uma superfície absorvente perpendicular à direção de propagação é igual à força sobre a superfície.

O valor médio da taxa de transferência de momento dividido pela área absorvente representa a força média por unidade de área, ou seja, a pressão de radiação devida à onda. Se o material for perfeitamente reflexivo, como uma superfície de metal, e a incidência for normal à superfície, então a pressão exercida é duplicada porque a direção do momento se reverte com a reflexão.

A luz solar exerce uma pressão de radiação muito mais forte no interior do Sol do que na Terra. A pressão de radiação no interior de estrelas significativamente mais massivas e brilhantes do que o Sol é tão alta que ela aumenta consideravelmente a pressão interna do gás, impedindo que essas estrelas entrem em colapso devido à sua própria gravidade. Às vezes, a pressão de radiação das estrelas pode impactar significativamente o material em suas proximidades imediatas.

A pressão de radiação desempenha um papel na explicação de muitos outros fenômenos astronômicos observados, incluindo a aparência dos cometas. Quando um cometa se aproxima do Sol, ele se aquece e sua superfície começa a evaporar. Alguns dos gases e poeiras formam caudas quando deixam o cometa. Radiation pressure is the push that light can exert on matter. When an electromagnetic wave is completely absorbed by a surface, its energy density is transferred as momentum to that surface. The rate of momentum transfer on a surface perpendicular to the wave gives the force, and the force per unit area is the radiation pressure.

A perfectly absorbing surface receives this pressure directly from the incoming wave. If the surface is perfectly reflecting, such as a metal surface, and the light strikes it straight on, the pressure doubles. That happens because the momentum changes direction after reflection.

Radiation pressure is much stronger inside the sun than it is on Earth. In stars that are more massive and brighter than the sun, it can greatly increase the internal gas pressure. This extra pressure helps keep those stars from collapsing under their own gravity.

Radiation pressure also helps explain comet tails. As a comet moves close to the sun, it warms up and its surface begins to evaporate. Gas and dust escape and form tails.

A comet has two tails. The ion tail is made mainly of ionized gas, and it interacts with the solar wind. That force is strong enough that the ion tail usually points directly away from the sun. The dust tail is electrically neutral, so it does not interact with the solar wind. Instead, sunlight pushes on it through radiation pressure, and this small force can make the dust tail bend away from the comet’s path.
