Numerical Calculations

As aplicações de engenharia dependem muito de cálculos numéricos, cujos resultados são representados em um formato padrão.
Em cálculos numéricos, a equação deve ser dimensionalmente homogênea e os termos devem ser expressos nas mesmas unidades.
A homogeneidade dimensional da equação é mantida independentemente da equação que está sendo avaliada.
Os números são arredondados para os algarismos significativos necessários para a precisão do resultado; e são expressos em múltiplos de 103. Se o número for menor que um, o número é arredondado para os algarismos significativos necessários e é expresso nos múltiplos de 10-3.
De acordo com a regra, quando um número termina com um dígito maior que cinco, ele é arredondado para cima, e quando o dígito é menor que cinco, o número permanece o mesmo, até os algarismos significativos.
Quando o número termina com o valor do algarismo cinco, ele é arredondado para cima somente se o número anterior for ímpar e, se for par, permanece o mesmo até os algarismos significativos.

Na área de engenharia, a representação do valor numérico é crítica. Apresentar ou relatar a resposta é uma das partes essenciais das práticas de engenharia. Cálculos numéricos são realizados utilizando calculadoras portáteis ou computadores, já que respostas numericamente precisas sempre são preferidas.

A solução de um problema é obtida utilizando diferentes métodos. Enquanto resolver manualmente símbolos algébricos é um dos métodos mais comuns, o método gráfico é frequentemente preferido. Computadores são úteis quando muitas equações precisam ser resolvidas. Uma equação dimensionalmente homogênea deve ser usada ao realizar esses cálculos. As unidades usadas nessas equações devem pertencer ao mesmo sistema.

A precisão de um problema numérico depende de vários fatores. O número de algarismos significativos contidos em qualquer valor numérico é um desses fatores. Como um número inteiro que termina com zeros sempre gera confusão, o resultado é relatado usando a notação de engenharia. A maioria dos valores é expressa utilizando prefixos.

Prefixos são sempre usados para expressar números grandes ou pequenos. O resultado é arredondado para os algarismos significativos necessários e expresso em múltiplos de (103).

Saber quantos algarismos significativos devem ser usados para expressar o valor numérico é essencial. Por exemplo, 34.600 pode ser expresso como 34,6(103) caso três algarismos significativos sejam necessários.

Se cinco algarismos significativos forem necessários, o mesmo número pode ser expresso como 0,34600(106).

Em decimais, os zeros iniciais são insignificantes; por exemplo, o decimal 0,00456 tem somente três algarismos significativos. Se o número começar com zeros, tais números são expressos como 4,56(10-3) ou 456(10-6).

Números muito grandes e muito pequenos são arredondados para os algarismos significativos necessários. No entanto, ao arredondar um número, a precisão do resultado deve permanecer a mesma. Quase todas as calculadoras são projetadas para arredondar o valor. Ao realizar várias etapas, é melhor não arredondar a resposta até a última etapa. Numerical calculations in engineering depend on clear values, correct units, and careful rounding. Presenting the answer is an important part of engineering practice, so numerically accurate results are preferred. Handheld calculators and computers are often used because they help produce accurate answers.

Problems can be solved in several ways. Solving algebraic symbols by hand is common, and the graphical method is often preferred in some cases. Computers are especially useful when many equations must be solved. In every case, the equation should be dimensionally homogeneous, which means the units must belong to the same system.

The accuracy of a numerical result depends on several factors, including the number of significant figures. Significant figures are the digits in a value that carry meaning, and they matter when reporting answers. Whole numbers that end in zeroes can be confusing, so results are often written in engineering notation. This format uses prefixes and expresses values as multiples of 10^3.

Engineering notation also helps show very large or very small numbers clearly. For example, 34,600 can be written as 34.6(10^3) when three significant figures are needed. If five significant figures are needed, the same number can be written as 0.34600(10^6). In decimals, leading zeroes are not significant, so 0.00456 has three significant figures. Values with leading zeroes can also be written as 4.56(10^-3) or 456(10^-6).

Rounding must be done carefully so the final accuracy is preserved. Very large or very small numbers are rounded to the required number of significant figures. During multi-step work, it is better not to round until the last step. Only the final answer should be rounded to the required accuracy, and in many engineering problems, three significant figures are used.
