O atrito seco ocorre quando duas superfícies sólidas deslizam uma contra a outra sem lubrificação ou fluido presente. Isso causa resistência ao empurrar objetos ao longo de uma superfície, como um jardineiro empurrando um carrinho de mão. A força aplicada para mover o carrinho causa atrito seco entre a roda e o solo.

Antes do carrinho de mão começar a se mover, a força de atrito estático age tangencialmente à superfície de contato, opondo-se à força que está prestes a induzir o movimento. Essa força de atrito impede que o carrinho de mão escorregue e ajuda a manter a estabilidade. É importante observar que a força de atrito estático está presente apenas quando não há movimento relativo entre as duas superfícies.

Quando o carrinho de mão está prestes a escorregar, a força de atrito estático máxima na interface é diretamente proporcional à força normal. Essa relação é definida pelo coeficiente de atrito estático, que depende dos tipos de materiais em contato e da rugosidade de suas superfícies.

Curiosamente, a força de atrito estático é independente da área de contato quando a pressão normal está dentro de uma faixa específica que evita deformação ou danos às superfícies em contato. Essa força também é proporcional à força normal, mas geralmente é menor do que a força de atrito estático máxima. No entanto, se o carrinho de mão se mover com uma velocidade muito baixa sobre a superfície, a força de atrito cinético se torna aproximadamente igual à força de atrito estático máxima. Dry friction is the resistance between two solid surfaces that move against each other without lubrication or any fluid. A common example is a gardener pushing a wheelbarrow across the ground. The wheel and the ground create dry friction that slows the motion.

Before the wheelbarrow starts to move, static friction acts at the contact surface. Static friction is the force that opposes motion before slipping begins, and it helps keep the wheelbarrow stable. It is present only when there is no relative motion between the two surfaces.

As the wheelbarrow is about to slip, the maximum static friction depends on the normal force. The normal force is the push that surfaces exert on each other at the contact point. This maximum static friction is described by the coefficient of static friction, which depends on the materials in contact and on how rough their surfaces are.

Static friction also does not depend on contact area when the normal pressure stays within a range that avoids deformation or damage. So, even if the wheel and the ground touch over a larger or smaller area, the static friction can stay the same under those conditions. Once the wheelbarrow begins to slide, kinetic friction takes over.

Kinetic friction is the friction force during motion. It is also proportional to the normal force, but it is usually smaller than the maximum static friction. At very low speed, however, kinetic friction can become nearly equal to the maximum static friction because the surfaces have more time to interact.

The coefficient of kinetic friction mainly depends on surface properties and the surrounding environment. Temperature, humidity, and surface contamination can change its value. Knowing how static and kinetic friction respond to material type, surface roughness, and environmental conditions helps in choosing the right materials for different uses.
