Os problemas de atrito seco podem ser categorizados em três tipos.
O primeiro tipo é o movimento iminente não aparente. Considere uma força aplicada a uma caixa.
Existem três incógnitas, que podem ser avaliadas a partir das três equações de equilíbrio. Assim, a força de atrito desenvolvida pode ser determinada.
O segundo tipo é o movimento iminente em todos os pontos de contato, por exemplo, uma escada colocada contra uma parede lisa.
As quatro incógnitas podem ser determinadas a partir das três equações de equilíbrio e uma equação de atrito estático que se aplicam ao ponto de contato.

Types of Friction Problems

A fricção é um conceito essencial na física, engenharia e vida cotidiana. É a força que se opõe ao movimento relativo ou à tendência desse movimento entre duas superfícies em contato. Um dos tipos mais comuns de fricção encontrados em várias aplicações é a fricção seca. Problemas de fricção seca podem ser amplamente categorizados em três tipos, cada um com características e desafios únicos.

O primeiro tipo de problema de fricção seca envolve situações em que não há movimento iminente aparente. Um exemplo típico disso é quando uma força é aplicada a uma caixa, mas ela permanece parada. As forças de fricção desenvolvidas entre o chão e a caixa se opõem à força aplicada e mantêm a caixa parada.

Para resolver esse tipo de problema, é necessário considerar as três incógnitas envolvidas: a força normal, a força de fricção e a força aplicada. Essas incógnitas podem ser avaliadas usando as três equações de equilíbrio que governam o sistema. Uma vez que essas incógnitas são determinadas, a força de fricção desenvolvida pode ser calculada, fornecendo uma visão dos fatores que afetam a estabilidade da caixa.

O segundo tipo de problema de fricção seca envolve situações em que ocorre movimento iminente em todos os pontos de contato. Um exemplo desse problema é uma escada colocada contra uma parede lisa. Nesse cenário, a escada está prestes a escorregar, e uma pessoa deve determinar o ângulo mínimo em que a escada pode ser colocada sem escorregar.

Essas incógnitas podem ser determinadas usando as três equações de equilíbrio e uma equação de fricção estática que se aplicam aos pontos de contato. Uma vez que esses valores são calculados, o ângulo mínimo em que a escada pode ser colocada sem escorregar pode ser avaliado.

O terceiro tipo de problema de fricção seca envolve situações em que ocorre movimento iminente em alguns, mas não em todos, os pontos de contato. Um exemplo desse tipo de problema é uma estrutura de dois membros sujeita a uma força horizontal desconhecida. Nesse caso, a estrutura pode experimentar o escorregamento em uma extremidade enquanto permanece parada na outra.

Para resolver esse problema, é necessário identificar as sete incógnitas envolvidas: as forças normais em ambos os pontos de contato, as forças de fricção em ambas as extremidades, a força horizontal aplicada e as forças de reação nos suportes. Seis equações de equilíbrio e uma das duas possíveis equações de fricção estática podem ser usadas para determinar essas incógnitas. Resolvendo essas equações, é possível determinar a força horizontal necessária para causar movimento na estrutura.

À medida que a força aplicada na estrutura aumenta, duas possibilidades podem ocorrer: escorregamento na extremidade esquerda enquanto a extremidade direita permanece parada ou vice-versa. Dry friction problems often focus on crates, ladders, and frames that are close to slipping. Dry friction is the force that resists relative motion, or the tendency for motion, between two surfaces in contact. In many physics and engineering problems, this force helps keep an object still or defines the point where motion is about to begin.

One common case has no clear impending motion. A force may be applied to a crate, but the crate stays at rest. The friction force between the floor and the crate opposes the applied force and keeps the crate stationary. To solve this kind of problem, the normal force, the friction force, and the applied force are the three unknowns. They can be found using the three equilibrium equations for the system.

A second type of problem reaches impending motion at every contact point. A ladder against a smooth wall is a good example. The ladder is just about to slip, and the goal is to find the smallest angle that still keeps it from sliding. This setup has four unknowns: the normal forces at both contact points, the friction force at the base, and the angle. The three equilibrium equations and one static friction equation are used to solve for these values.

A third type involves impending motion at some contact points, but not at others. A two-member frame with an unknown horizontal force is one example. The frame may slip at one end while the other end remains stationary. This case has seven unknowns, including the normal forces, the friction forces at both ends, the applied horizontal force, and the reaction forces at the supports. Six equilibrium equations and one of the two possible static friction equations are used to determine the force needed to start movement. As the applied force increases, the frame may slip on the left while the right side stays fixed, or the reverse may happen.
