Considere uma correia plana enrolada em um conjunto de polias, experimentando tensões na correia nas extremidades da polia motriz.
Para um movimento de polia no sentido anti-horário, a magnitude de T2 é maior que T1 devido ao atrito entre a correia e a superfície da polia.
Conhecer o ângulo total de contato da correia com a superfície e o coeficiente de atrito permite estimar as tensões.
Um diagrama de corpo livre de um elemento diferencial AB da correia é desenhado.
Assumindo movimento iminente, a força de atrito se opõe ao movimento de deslizamento da correia, fazendo com que a magnitude da tensão da correia atuando no ponto B aumente em dT.
Aplicando o equilíbrio de força horizontal e vertical e usando as aproximações cosseno e seno, duas equações de equilíbrio de força são obtidas.
O produto de dois diferenciais em comparação com os diferenciais de primeira ordem é negligenciado nas equações de equilíbrio vertical, enquanto a equação de equilíbrio horizontal é simplificada ainda mais.

Frictional Forces on Flat Belts

Correias planas são comumente usadas em várias aplicações industriais para transmitir energia de uma polia para outra. Quando uma correia plana é enrolada em um conjunto de polias, ela experimenta diferentes tensões nas extremidades da polia de acionamento devido ao atrito entre a correia e a superfície da polia. Quando a polia se move em sentido anti-horário, a tensão T2 no lado oposto da polia, onde a correia está se afastando, é maior do que a tensão T1 no lado onde a correia está se movendo em direção à polia.

Para estimar as tensões em uma correia plana, é necessário conhecer o ângulo total de contato correia-superfície e o coeficiente de atrito entre as superfícies. Um diagrama de corpo livre de um elemento diferencial AB da correia pode ser desenhado assumindo movimento iminente.

A força de atrito se opõe ao movimento de deslizamento da correia, fazendo com que a magnitude da tensão da correia atuando no ponto B aumente em dT. Essa tensão diferencial pode ser usada para relacionar as tensões em diferentes pontos ao longo da correia.

Para determinar a relação entre as tensões da correia, são utilizadas as equações de equilíbrio de forças horizontais e verticais, juntamente com aproximações de cosseno e seno.

Essas equações consideram as forças atuando no elemento diferencial AB nas direções horizontal e vertical. O produto de dois diferenciais comparado aos diferenciais de primeira ordem é negligênciado nas equações de equilíbrio vertical, enquanto a equação de equilíbrio horizontal é simplificada ainda mais. As equações de equilíbrio são combinadas e integradas entre limites correspondentes.

Flat belt tension and friction control how power moves from one pulley to another. Flat belts are used in many industrial systems to transmit power between pulleys. As the belt wraps around the pulleys, the tension changes because of friction between the belt and the pulley surface.

When a pulley turns counterclockwise, the belt side moving away from the pulley has the higher tension, called T2. The side moving toward the pulley has the lower tension, called T1. To estimate these tensions, the total angle of contact and the coefficient of friction between the surfaces must be known.

The belt can be analyzed with a free-body diagram of a small belt element, AB. This analysis assumes impending motion, which means the belt is close to slipping. Friction acts against the sliding motion, so the tension at point B increases by a small amount, dT.

The tension relationship is found using horizontal and vertical force equilibrium. Cosine and sine approximations help simplify the force equations for the small belt element. In the vertical equation, the product of two differentials is neglected, and the horizontal equation is simplified further. The equations are then combined and integrated between the proper limits to obtain the belt-tension expression.

This result applies to flat belts that pass over curved contacting surfaces. Frictional forces are important because they affect the performance and efficiency of the belt-driven system. If the belt is too tight, it can wear out early and reduce efficiency. If it is too loose, it can slip and reduce power transmission. Proper tension is usually set by changing the distance between the pulleys or by using a tensioning device.
